1. General
The Sundström SR 590 welding shield is used together with
the Sundström SR 500 or SR 700 battery-powered fan units
or the compressed air attachment SR 507 and is designed for
protecting the user against inhaling harmful and irritating air
pollutants and against radiation and weld splatter during arc
welding, MAG welding and TIG welding.
Before use, these user instructions and those for the fan unit,
filters and compressed air attachment must be thoroughly
studied. consult your work supervisor or get in touch with the
sales outlet.
You are also welcome to get in touch with the Technical Service
Department at Sundstrom Safety AB.
Use of a respirator must be part of a respiratory protection
program.
For advice see EN 529:2005.
The guidance contained in these standards highlights impor-
tant aspects of a respiratory protective device program but
does not replace national or local regulations.

2. System description

The SR 590 welding shield must be equipped with a suitable
welding lens and is connected by a breathing hose either to
the battery-powered fan or to the compressed air attachment.
The fan is equipped with filters and must be running when the
welding shield is in use.
The filtered air blown into the shield pressurizes it and prevents
the polluted surrounding air from reaching the user.
The shield has mountings for yoke-type ear protectors. Acces-
sories in the form of automatic welding filters, correction lenses,
neck protection and welding hoods are available.
3. Warnings/limitations
Warnings
The equipment must not be used
• If the surrounding air does not have a normal oxygen
content.
• If the pollutants are unknown.
• In environments that are immediately dangerous to life and
health (IDLH).
• With oxygen or oxygen-enriched air.
• If you find breathing difficult.
• If you can smell or taste the pollutants.
• If you feel dizzy, nauseous or suffer other discomfort.
• If the alarms of the fan are initiated (sound and light signals
and vibrations), which indicates that the air supply is lower
than recommended.

• If the fan is switched off. In this abnormal situation, the
equipment provides no protection. In addition, there is risk
of carbon dioxide quickly accumulating in the face part of
the shield, with consequent oxygen starvation.
Limitations
• Check that the welding lenses have the correct scale number
for your work.
• The shield must always be fitted with a protective lens in
addition to the welding lens.
• Always observe the fire safety rules.
• If you have a beard or sideboards, you cannot expect the
shield to be completely tight.
• If the face seal is not in contact with your face, the shield
will not be pressurized as necessary for obtaining the right
protection factor.
• If your pace of work is very intensive, a slight vacuum may
occur in the mask during the inhalation phase, which may
give rise to the risk of leakage.
• The equipment is not approved for connection to a mobile
compressed air system.
• A risk assessment has to be done to avoid possible perilous
connections possible at the workplace, e.g. Nitrox.
• The filters must not be connected directly to the welding
shield.
• If the equipment is used in surroundings with high wind
speeds, the protection factor may be reduced.
• Keep an eye on the breathing hose to make sure that it does
not stick out, since it could then get hooked onto objects in
the surroundings.
• Never use the breathing hose for lifting or carrying the
equipment.
4. Use
4.1 Check the manufacturer's minimum
design flow (MMDF)
See also the user instructions for fan unit SR 500/SR 700 or
compressed air attachment SR 507 whichever is used.
• Check that the fan is complete, correctly fitted, thoroughly
cleaned and undamaged.
• Start the fan.
• Place the welding shield in the flow meter and grip the lower
part of the bag to ensure a good seal around the breathing
hose. Hold the flow meter tube with the other hand so that
the tube points vertically up from the bag. Fig. 1.
• Read the position of the ball in the tube. It should float on
a level with or slightly above the 175 l/min marking on the
tube. Fig. 2.
