FELLING LARGE TREES
(6 inchesin diameterorlarger)
The notchmethodis usedto fell large
trees. A notchis cuton the sideof the
tree in the desireddirection offall. After
a felling cut is made onthe opposite
side oftree, thetree shouldfall in the
direction of the notch.
NOTE: Ifthe tree has largebuttress
roots,removethembeforemakingthe
notch.
NOTCH CUT AND FELLINGTREE
• Make notchcut by cutting thetop of
the notchfirst.Cutthrough1/3ofthe
diameterof the tree. Nextcomplete
the notchbycuttingthe bottom. S ee
illustration. Oncethe notchiscut re-
movethe wedgeof Wood from the
tree.
• Afterremoving the wood,make the
felling cut onthe oppositesideof the
notch.Thisis doneby makinga cut
abouttwo incheshigherthanthe cen-
ter ofthe notch.Thiswillleave
enoughuncutwoodbetweenthe fell-
ingcut and thenotchto form a hinge.
This hingewillhelppreventthe tree
from fallingin the wrongdirection.
