How the Spillway works (See Fig. 1)
Water enters the Spillway at the bottom of the unit and passes through the coarse media pad
(included). The fi lter pad performs mechanical fi ltration, capturing dirt and debris. The pad also
harbors friendly bacteria, which performs biological fi ltering. The water then passes through the
biomedia (not included), which effectively performs biological fi ltration. The fi ltered water then
returns to the pond via the waterfall.
• For 1-1/2" (38 mm) non-kink hosing, use a Laguna PT491 Connector (included).
• For hosing with a diameter other than 1-1/2" (38 mm), use an appropriately sized connector
with a 1-1/2" (38 mm) threaded end.
Installation Instructions
Required equipment:
• Circulating pump, such as a Laguna Max-Flo or PowerJet pump (not included).
• Flexible hosing, such as Laguna non-kink hosing, which is specifi cally designed for use in
ponds and is safe for fi sh and plants. The length of the hosing must be suffi ciently long enough
to extend from the pump to the Spillway (Non-kink tubing not included).
1. Rinse the fi lter pad and biological fi lter media. Note that the biological fi lter media comes
in a mesh bag for convenient installation and maintenance. Do not remove it from the
bag. Install it as is, in the Spillway.
2. Place the fi lter pad and biological fi lter media in the Spillway (as illustrated in Fig. 1), with the
fi lter pad placed at the bottom of the unit and the bag of biological fi lter media placed on top
of the fi lter pad.
3. Install the Spillway in the desired location, at the spot where you want the waterfall to begin.
Ensure that the waterfall faces the pond. The unit can be installed in or above the ground.
4. IMPORTANT: The pond liner should be attached to the front end of the unit, underneath the
waterfall. The Spillway includes a faceplate which allows for easy liner attachment. Bring the
liner to the underside of the waterfall (as illustrated in Fig. 2). Position the liner so that there is
plenty of slack preventing the liner from stretching or pulling after the screws are attached (as
illustrated in Fig. 3). Position the faceplate (as illustrated in Fig. 4). Poke holes through the liner
and secure the liner faceplate with screws starting at one end and working your way over one
screw at a time (as illustrated in Fig. 5). The fi nal attached liner should appear similar to Fig. 6.
5. Attach the hosing to the output of the pump and connect it to the bulkhead located at the
intake of the Spillway (as illustrated in Fig. 1).
Maintenance Instructions
• When the fi lter pad shows signs of being clogged, remove it from the Spillway and thoroughly
rinse in a bucket of pond water. Note: remove the biomedia above it fi rst.
• Rinse the fi lter pad twice a month and replace it every pond season for best results.
• The biological media should not be disturbed until it must be replaced or rinsed.
• We recommend replacing 50% of the biological media at one time.
At the end of the pond season:
• Remove and discard the fi lter pad and biomedia
• Rinse out the Spillway thoroughly
WINTERIZING
• The Spillway can remain outdoors
• Winterize the pump as per manufacturer's recommendations
• Drain the water from the unit
• Rinse off fi lter media and store indoors
• Ensure that the tubing is free of debris
