Using the Unit
STIHL diagnostic software and STIHL
analyzers are designed for analyzing
specific components, troubleshooting
and making adjustments.
MDG 1 Engine Analyzer
Country-specific safety precautions
–
and the safety instructions in the
user manuals must be observed
when the power tool and engine
analyzer are started.
To reduce the risk of personal injury,
–
do not operate the engine analyzer
if it is damaged or not properly
assembled.
Use the engine analyzer only for
–
testing STIHL power tools made in
2000 and later.
Visual inspection – check power tool
–
for external damage.
Look for leaks – if there is fuel
–
leakage, do not start the engine.
Before starting the test, always take
–
precautions to eliminate the risk of
accidents and injury from contact
with the power tool's attachment.
Position power tool accordingly and
mount safety devices or
accessories (e.g. cutterless chain) if
necessary.
Use only spark plugs of the type
–
recommended by STIHL.
Connect the engine analyzer
–
between the spark plug and spark
plug boot.

1.
Make sure the contacts are firmly
–
seated – grounding clips must
engage spark plug's hexagon.
Pull off the boot – turn slightly
–
counterclockwise and remove.
On chainsaws with a one-piece
–
shroud, mount the cover and
cutterless chain to reduce the risk of
injury from the rotating fanwheel
and risk of engine damage due to
overheating.
Clip the cover the the front handle –
–
cover must locate against outside of
fan housing.
2.
On chainsaws on which the clutch
–
drum or spur sprocket is exposed
after connecting the engine
analyzer, mount the cover and
cutterless chain to reduce the risk of
injury.
On chainsaws on which the air filter
–
cannot be held in place by the
carburetor box cover after
connecting the engine analyzer:
Secure air filter with nut (1138 140
9500) to reduce the risk of engine
damage.
Wear personal protective
–
equipment.
Fuel, prepare and start the power
–
tool as described in the instruction
manual.
Never run the engine indoors or in
–
poorly ventilated locations – risk of
fatal injury from breathing toxic
fumes.
Carry out adjustments with extreme
–
care because of the increased risk
of accidents and injury – improper
handling can result in burns and
other serious injuries.
User entries in the computer are not
–
possible during the test with the
engine running – the test run is
finished by shutting off the engine.
