TANDEM
WHOLE HOUSE FAN
APPLICATION
INSTRUCTIONS
Installation Recommendations
and Cautions:
1. Use appropriate safety glasses, gloves and other
equipment to avoid injury.
2. DO NOT manually open the tandem whole house fan
attic side door; it will open automatically when unit is
powered. This can damage the internal motor.
3. Make sure of adequate attic access to accommodate
transporting unit into attic during installation.
4. WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE, ELEC-
TRIC SHOCK, OR INJURY TO PERSONS, OBSERVE
THE FOLLOWING:
a) Installation work and electrical wiring must be done
by qualified person(s) in accordance with applicable
codes and standards, including codes for fire ratings.
b) When cutting or drilling into walls or ceilings, do not
damage electrical wiring and other hidden utilities.
5. Do not install in attics with less than 500 square feet
of area of attic space.
6. This product has sharp edges that can cause injury.
Wear durable work gloves during installation.
7. WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRIC
SHOCK, OR INJURY TO PERSONS, OBSERVE THE
FOLLOWING:
a) Use this unit only in the manner intended by the
manufacturer. If you have questions, contact the
manufacturer.
b) Before servicing or cleaning unit, switch power off
at the service panel and take all steps necessary to
prevent power from being switched on accidentally.
When the service disconnecting means cannot be
locked, securely fasten a prominent warning device,
such as a tag, to the service panel.
8. CAUTION: This unit has an unguarded impeller.
DO NOT use in locations readily accessible to people
or animals.
9. This fan should be connected to a circuit with mini-
mum 14 gauge wiring, that has at least 5 amperes of
available capacity. If you can not confirm that there
is sufficient electrical capacity on an existing circuit,
install a separate dedicated circuit. DO NOT use and
extension cord to operate. All electrical wiring should
comply with National Electric Code and all other local
codes. Contact a qualified electrician if you are not
comfortable or familiar with electrical codes and/or
installations.
Operating Recommendations
and Cautions:
1. For general residential ventilating use only. Do not
use to exhaust hazardous or explosive materials and
vapors.
2. Always provide adequate intake ventilation by open-
ing doors and/or windows.

3. Use this unit only in the manner intended by GAF. If
you have any questions please contact Master Flow
Technical Service at 1-800-211-9612.
4. Never operate wood stoves and fireplaces at the
same time as your tandem whole house fan.
5. Sufficient air is needed for proper combustion and
exhausting of gases through the flue (chimney) of
fuel burning equipment to prevent back drafting.
Follow the heating equipment manufacturer's guide-
lines and safety standards such as those published
by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA),
and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration,
and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and local
code authorities.
6. To reduce risk of injury, always disconnect power
before servicing. Make sure blade set screw is
tightened.
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OR FIRE OR ELEC-
TRIC SHOCK, DO NOT USE THIS FAN WITH ANY SOLID
STATE SPEED CONTROL DEVICE.

1. Determine Location
Min. Clearance
Your Master Flow
11¼"
designed to be horizontally mounted on the floor of
the attic, usually above a centrally located hallway. In
11¼"
the selected hallway, locate the center of the ceiling
16"
(40.64cm)
by measuring half the distance between the two hall-

way walls. Mark this location with a pencil. Drill a
hole in ceiling at the mark and push a marker into
the hole so it can be located in the attic (Figure 1).
Note: Make sure there are no obstructions above in
the attic before drilling.
2. Check Attic Location
Once in the attic, check the hole previously made in
the ceiling. Locate the joist nearest to the hole and
clear all insulation between the joists near the loca-
tion of the hole. Clear approximately 18" (45.72cm)
on all sides of the hole. Measure the distance
between selected joists. For 16" (40.64cm) on-cen-
B
ter joists, there must be at least 14
22½"
(57.15cm)
unit clearance. For 24" (60.96cm) on-center joists,
there must be 22
A
24"
Note: Wear work gloves to avoid skin irritation when
handling insulation. Check the area for all wires
and/or pipes. If any exist and cannot be relocated by
a professional, an alternate location to mount the fan

is necessary. Note: There must be at least 24"
GREEN
(61cm) inches between the top of the fan and the
roof above to allow the attic side door to fully open
and prevent motors from overheating. This will
ensure efficient operation.
3. Set Cut-Out Location
With your previously drilled center hole in sight, pro-
ceed with marking the fan's cut-out. Starting at the
center hole, use a framing square and proceed in a
perpendicular line to each joist and drill a hole.
These two holes will mark the center of the sides of
the cut-out. Second, locate the four corners of the
cut-out. This may vary depending on how your home
is framed, either 16" (40.64cm) or 24" (96cm) on-
center. For 16" (40.64cm) on-center joists, measure
11
1
/
" (28.58cm) out in both directions from the two
4
holes along the joists (Figure 2a). For homes with
®
24" (96cm) on-center joists measure 7
(Figure 2b). Mark these four locations with a pencil
or marker and drill holes.
4. Cut the Hole
Using a utility knife or sheetrock saw, cut between
the marked four corner locations. If you are cutting
from inside the attic, you should cut a hand-sized
hole in the center to allow for securing the sheetrock.
This will ensure the sheetrock does not tear from
below (Figure 3).
5. Install Framing
Depending on your ceiling joist construction 2"x4"
(5.08cm x 10.16cm), 2"x6" (5.08cm x 15.24cm), or
2"x8" (5.08cm x 20.32cm), cut the appropriate size
lumber to fit in between the joists "A" and "B". For
homes with 16" (40.64cm) on-center joists, follow
Figure 4a. For homes with 24" (96cm) on-center
joists, use Figure 4b. In general, 16" (40.64cm)
on-center joists will have 14
and 24" (96cm) on-center joists will have
22
1
/
" (57.15cm) spacing. Using nails or wood
2
screws, install the cut framing pieces between the
attic joists. Make sure they are flush with the
exposed sheetrock edges below.
