Introduction
The Greenlee SF-530 Multifunction Stud Sensor uses four different scanning
modes to detect studs, metal, and hot unshielded AC wiring behind walls,
floors, and ceilings, as well as rebar in concrete. It also features the SpotLite
Pointing System, which automatically displays a beam of light over the edge of
a stud or near metal and AC.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Electric shock hazard:
This tool will not detect hot wires inside metal conduit,
behind metallic wall covering, or behind some plywood
or thick wall sections. Always turn off power when
nailing, cutting, or drilling near electrical wires.
Contact with live circuits could result in severe injury or
death.
Eye injury hazard:
Depending on the proximity of electrical wiring or pipes
to the wall surface, this tool may detect them in the
same manner as studs. Always use caution and wear eye
protection when nailing, cutting, or drilling in walls,
floors, and ceilings that may contain these items.
Failure to wear eye protection could result in serious eye
injury from flying debris.
Remember that studs or joists are normally spaced 406 mm (16") or 610
mm (24") apart and are 38 mm (1-1/2") in width. Anything closer together or
a different width may not be a stud, joist, or firebreak.

Installing the Battery
1. Press the battery door release down with a coin and remove door.
2. Connect a 9-volt battery to the cable and place inside. Replace the battery
door and snap shut. The battery will last approximately two years under
normal conditions.
Turning the Power On/Off and Selecting Mode
1. Press and hold the On/Off button to turn the unit on. Release this button to
turn the unit off.
Note: The unit automatically turns off after 15 minutes of continuous use.
2. Slide the Mode Selector switch to the desired scanning mode. The mode can
be selected with the unit on or off.
Calibrating and Scanning in Stud Scan
or Stud DeepScan Modes
Notes:
• Use Stud Scan mode for depths to about 19 mm (3/4") and Stud DeepScan
for depths up to 38 mm (1-1/2") or double layers.
• Do not lift or tilt the unit during calibration or scanning.
1. Position the unit flat against the wall. Select the mode. Press and hold the
On/Off button.
2. The TruCal calibration indicator will appear on the LCD screen as the unit
automatically calibrates in less than one second.
3. Slowly slide the unit horizontally across the wall,
right or left.
4. When the full arrow appears on the LCD and a steady
tone sounds, you have located the edge of the stud.
Mark this spot. The SpotLite Pointing System will
also shine a beam of light at the stud edge. Continue
holding the On/Off button in and scan beyond the
marked spot until the arrow bars disappear.
5. Without releasing the On/Off button, slide the unit in the
reverse direction to locate the other edge of the stud.
Mark this second spot. The middle of the stud is
centered between the two marks.
Calibrating and Scanning in Metal Mode
Note: Metal can be detected to about 38 mm (1-1/2") deep in walls.
1. Select Metal mode. Press and hold the On/Off button, and then calibrate the
unit in air, away from metal objects, until the TruCal calibration indicator
appears on the screen. Place the unit flat on the
surface.
2. While holding in the On/Off button, slowly move the
unit randomly to locate the target. The LCD screen
indicates proximity to metal, with the center arrow
indicating closest proximity. The SpotLite will also
shine a beam of light. Mark this spot.
3. Continue scanning beyond the marked spot to
detect the width of the target.
If the target is wide, reverse to locate and mark the
other edge. Avoid sawing or drilling between the
two marks. Widths will vary from a single peak for
narrow rebar to a wide area for metal studs,
I-beams, junction boxes, etc.
Scanning in AC Mode
Note: AC depths to about 51 mm (2") deep.
1. Select AC Scan mode to determine the position of hot wires. Begin by
placing the unit at some position away from hot wiring.
2. While holding in the On/Off button, slowly slide the unit
across the wall. The AC Indicator will appear on the LCD
if a hot wire is nearby.
The LCD display indicates proximity to the hot wire, with
the center arrow indicating closest proximity. Mark this
spot. The SpotLite will also shine a beam of light.
