Instructions for carrying out a user-orientated
microwave leakage test on commercial oven
appliances to the requirements of
BS EN 60335-2-90: 1998
A microwave leakage test is carried out to verify compliance with BS
EN 60335-2-90: 1998, Safety of household and similar electrical
appliances - commercial microwave ovens and EN 60335-2-
25/A1:2000 particular requirements for microwave ovens
Note: The following precautions must be observed to avoid possible
exposure to excessive microwave energy:-
Microwave appliances should not be adjusted or repaired by
anyone except properly qualified service personnel.
It is important not to defeat or tamper with safety interlock switches.
Check that the safety interlock switches operate before carrying out
a leakage test.
The following test procedures are specified to verify non-hazardous
radiation at less than 5mW. cm
1.
Normal operation test.
2.
Thermal test
3.
Enclosure test
4.
Door opening sequence test
5.
door seal continuity test
6.
Door seal foreign matter test
The above test are carried out with the microwave cooking appliance
connected to its rated power source and operating at its maximum
microwave power setting. The polypropylene beaker provided is filled
with 275 ± 15mls of tap water at an initial temperature of 20˚C ± 5˚C
mixed with 1% by volume common salt, and placed in the centre of the
load bearing surface of the oven within the cooking cavity. During the
tests the water should be changed as necessary to prevent boiling and
evaporation. For each test the Microwave leakage detector should be
moved about the external surface of the oven as described in the
operating instructions. A thermometer (supplied) should be used to
check the above mentioned temperature.
The test conditions are as follows:-
1. Normal operation test
This is carried out with all shelves, fittings and accessories in place
within the cooking cavity.
2. Thermal test
This test is required to achieve maximum door seal temperature of
combination appliances, e.g. thermal/browning ovens utilising
sequential or simultaneous control programmes. With the beaker
removed the oven is thermally heated (i.e. only use the browning
element and the microwave) for one hour or for the duration of the
maximum timer setting, whichever is shorter. The browning unit
should be set to heat the oven to 240°C ± 5°C. The normal
operation test is then repeated.
3. Enclosure test
This is carried out with all the shelves fittings and accessories
removed which are normally removable without the use of tools.
4. Door opening sequence test
The normal operation test is repeated with the appliance door being
operated in small increments through the normal door opening
sequence and searching for the point at which the interlock
switches the appliance off. At no time during the test must abnormal
force be applied to distort the door.
5. Door seal continuity test
The normal operation test is repeated with a minute gap created in
the door closure.
This is achieved by using high quality bonded paper shim 60± 5mm
wide, 0.1/0.2mm thick placed between the door and the cooking
cavity. The test is repeated one shim at a time in ten different places
equidistant around the door seal area.

6. Door seal foreign matter test
The normal operation test is repeated with a light coating of
common light cooking oil applied onto all door sealing surfaces.
Warning: The microwave leakage detector must be tested before use
to ensure full functionality.
Do not use the microwave leakage detector if the full complemented of
green, yellow, red, and audible tone indicators are not simultaneously
activated in the test position.
* Replace battery if the green indicator fails to illuminate.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MUST THIS DEVICE BE PLACED IN
A MICROWAVE OVEN
