Additional Safety Rules for Drill Press
Following safety procedures during drilling operations
will help eliminate accidents, loss of time and materials.
• Do not support the work-pieces by hand. Use a
holding device to prevent the work-piece from being
torn from the operator's hand.
• Support long work with an outboard tool rest.
• Never make any adjustments while the machine is
operating.
• Never clean away chips with your hand. Use a brush.
• Keep all loose clothing away from turning tools.
• Make sure that the cutting tools are running straight
before starting the operation.
• Never place tools or equipment on the drilling tables.
• Never climb on the drill press table, it could break or
pull the entire tool down on you.
• Keep all guards in place while operating.
• Ease up on the feed as the drill breaks through the
work to avoid damaged tools or work-pieces.
• Remove
all
chuck
before operating.
• Always wear eye protection while operating any
drilling machines.
• Don't attempt to operate on anything but designated
voltage.
Electrical Connection
Be sure your power supply agrees with the nameplate
marking. A voltage decrease of 10 percent or more will
cause a loss of power and overheating. All B&D tools
are factory tested. If this tool does not operate, check
the power supply.
Familiarization (Fig. 1)
The drill press comes disassembled. Remove the parts
from their packaging and check to verify that no parts
are missing. First bolt the support column to the base.
Attach the table to the support column and set on the
head. Secure the gear head on the right side with the
two imbus bolts. Screw the three drill lever arms into

the drill press shaft and place the drill chuck on the drill
spindle.
WARNING! Clean the drill chuck and the drill spindle
thoroughly so that they are completely free of grease.
Installing and Adjusting
PERFORM ALL ADJUSTMENTS WITH THE DRILL
PRESS UNPLUGGED
Testing the Belt (Fig. 2)
Loosen the attachment screw (wing screw) on the right
side of the motor. Push back the motor base and
tighten the attachment screw. The proper tension has
been achieved when the V-belt can be pressed in
approximately 1 cm in the middle between the two belt
discs.
Speed Adjustment (Fig. 3)
The drill press has 5 speed settings which can be set
by simply adjusting the V-belt. To set the speed, first
remove the gear cover and loosen the attachment
screw. Slide the belt onto the desired belt discs. The
upper discs will provide the highest speed and the
lower discs the lowest. Tense the belt according as per
the testing belt procedure.
Table Adjustment (Fig. 4)
The table is fastened to the support column. The height
of the table can be set after the height adjustment lever
has been loosened for this purpose. Adjust the table so
that there is sufficient space between the tip of the drill
bit and the surface of the material to be worked. The
table can be swung to the side when working with a
large piece material. The material can be clamped
directly onto the base on the tool.
Operation
Plug the drill press into any power source. Refer to the
nameplate for voltage. Be sure the cord will not interfere
with your work.
WARNING! PERFORM ALL ADJUSTMENTS WITH
THE DRILL PRESS UNPLUGGED
Once you have assembled the press and everything is
tight and aligned you need to see if there is a wobble.
Put the largest diameter bit (make sure it is perfectly
straight) you have into the chuck and snug it up. Run
the drill press at its lowest speed and see if the edge of
the bit right at the tip is moving side to side. If you see
movement you need to determine why. You've already
checked the bit, so now reseat it in the chuck and try
again. If there is still movement, remove the chuck and
