! Read instructions before use
! Do not open the case; do not modify the unit in any way. In
particular do not modify the DC power connector (designed
for cigar-ette lighter socket), as this contains the fuse
(see Section 4)
! Charge only fast-charge type NiCd and NiMH batteries; packs
must be balanced before charging
! Packs must consist of cells of the same type and capacity
! Do not attempt to charge two batteries simultaneously
! Do not charge batteries which are already warm or hot.
Allow to cool off to ambient temperature before recharging
! Don't connect the charger and battery with reverse polarity
! Never leave the charger running unsupervised
! The charger may get very warm when running. Take care
when touching the case
⇒ Don't cover the case; provide adequate cooling
⇒ Do not leave the charger in direct sunshine
! Keep the charger, battery and leads well away from
flammable or temperature-sensitive surfaces and objects
! Protect the charger from damp

Connect the red DC plug to the 12 V car cigarette lighter socket. The
charger's maximum current drain (see Section 1: Specification) must
not exceed the maximum current of the cigarette lighter socket (de-
fined by the fuse rating).
Alternatively the charger can be connected to a suitable stabilised
mains PSU producing 13.8 V DC / min. 8 A (available from model
shops and electronic component suppliers) using the adaptor lead
(with crocodile clips) supplied. Take care not to connect the charger
with reversed polarity:

The red LED marked POWER glows to indicate the charger is ready.
Note:
The red DC connector which is used to connect to the 12 V car cigar-
ette lighter socket contains a cartridge fuse which protects the
charger. If the charger does not appear to work at all, check this fuse
first and replace it if necessary. To do this unscrew the end of the DC
connector where it surrounds the end contact. The fuse can then be
removed and replaced using a standard glass cartridge fuse (250 V /
15 A / fast-acting). On no account dismantle the connector com-
pletely by removing the cross-point screw!
The red wire with the black indicator line in the charger power lead is
the POSITIVE wire (+).

HARGING
Connect the battery to be charged
Connect the pack to the charge output (DC AUSGANG/DC OUTPUT).
The charger is designed for use with standard charge leads fitted with
4 mm Ø banana plugs.
! Avoid short-circuits. This also applies to the charge lead
connectors. Always connect the charge lead to the charger first,
and only then to the battery to be charged.
Be sure to maintain correct polarity. Don't reverse the connections:

Batteries fitted with MULTIPLEX HC (high-current) connectors can be
charged using the charge lead supplied. The terminal clamp
connectors on the charge lead should be plugged into the „+" and „—"
terminals on the side of the case, and secured by tightening the
terminal nuts.
Test phase (battery check)
When you connect the battery to be charged the red LED marked
LADEN/CHARGE glows. The LEDs 40%, 80% and VOLL/READY will flash
alternately, indicating that the battery is being tested (battery check).
This lasts about 1 minute. If the battery is faulty, the four LEDs
LADEN/CHARGE, 40%, 80% and VOLL/READY flash simultaneously.
Setting the charge current
During the test phase you can set the desired charge current using
the charge current adjustor (rotary knob) and the load ammeter.
! Observe the battery manufacturer's charging instructions
If the battery manufacturer's information is not available:
NiCd batteries: 0.5 ... 2 C
E.g. charge current for 600 mAh capacity NiMH pack:
600 mAh x 0.3 C ... 1 C = 180 mA ... 600 mA
The fast charge process
When the test phase is over the fast charge process begins using the
set current. During the first 3 minutes the current is pulsed, the
pauses growing steadily shorter until the current is constant. The
charge current is then interrupted briefly at intervals for measuring
and testing.
It is normal for the battery to warm up during charging (up to about
50°C). If the pack gets hotter than this, disconnect it from the charger.
It may be that the battery is not designed for fast charging, or you
may have set too high a charge current. Allow the battery to cool
down, then charge it again at a lower charge current.
