SELF-ADJUSTING METALLIC MASS DETECTOR WITH AN INDUCTIVE COIL
REMARKS
These instructions are aimed at professionally qualified "installers of electrical
equipment" and must respect the local standards and regulations in force. The use
and installation of these appliances must rigorously respect the indications supplied
by the manufacturer and the safety standards and regulations in force.
Attention! Only for EU customers - WEEE marking.
This symbol indicates that once the products life-span has expired
it must be disposed of separately from other rubbish. The user is
therefore obliged to either take the product to a suitable differential
collection site for electronic and electrical goods or to send it back to
the manufacturer if the intention is to replace it with a new equivalent
version of the same product.
Suitable differential collection, environmental friendly treatment and disposal
contributes to avoiding negative effects on the ambient and consequently
health as well as favouring the recycling of materials. Illicitly disposing of this
product by the owner is punishable by law and will be dealt with according to
the laws and standards of the individual member nation.
Description
This device is suitable for detecting the presence of metallic masses in a magnetic
field generated by a special external circuit (sensitive element) connected to it.
The system is made up of four parts:
1) An MWZ detection device contained in a special protective case made of extruded
aluminium with shockproof plastic end pieces.
2) Socket for fitting on panelling or rails DIN46277
3) A sensitive element (not supplied by us) that should be made up of a multipolar
cable with one or more wires and must respect the measurements as specified
in the drawings.
4) A bipolar cable (not supplied by us) with which to connect the sensitive element
to the detecting device. If you use two single wire cables these should be loosely
wound together.
Use
The MWZ DETECTOR is best used in the following fields:
- The automatic opening of gates and doors where there is intense traffic (for blocks
of flats, office buildings and industry etc.).
- The control of vehicles in pay car parks.
- Near automatic traffic light installations.
- Detection, in predetermined places, of the presence of metallic masses in general.

Positioning the detector
The appliance is located inside a container that allows it to be installed on a panel
or a DIN rail. As the MWZ detector has a protection grade of IP40 it must be placed
inside a box or casing in order to guarantee protection against water infiltration. It is
absolutely forbidden to install the device outdoors and it cannot be embedded. The
interconnection between the coil and the detector must be protected against water
infiltration via capillarity. Access to the appliance for future regulation and calibration
must be guaranteed.
Making the sensitive element (fig. 2)
The possible dimensions are represented in figure 2. The sensitive element shall be
made by taking into consideration the system's requirements, the fundamental part
of which is a multipolar cable, made up of at least two wires (Ø 1-1,5 mm). The wires
that make up the cable have to be connected in series. It is important that the sum
of their lengths does not exceed 40 m and is not less than 20 m.
Note: It is advisable to use a rectangular form when realizing the sensitive element,
the shorter side of which should measure 500 mm and the length will depend on the
system's requirements but it should never exceed 6 m.
Installation (fig. 3-4-5)
- Dig a rectangular shaped excavation in the area which is to be controlled by the
sensitive element.
Note: The excavation must not be deeper than 100 mm.
- If necessary protect the sensitive element with a special plastic sheath which is
suitable for laying underground.
- Place the sensitive element into the excavation making sure that it lies correctly
and that there are no sharp edges or protuberances that could damage it.
- Connect the two ends of the coil to the appropriate binding posts (LINK) using a
bipolar cable no longer than 5 m. The connection should be as short as possible
in order to optimise the operation of the system.

- Lay the coil underground and embed it in cement to ensure a stable position and
Adjusting the DETECTOR
The adjustment of the detector must be carried out after having connected the coil
endings to the binding posts (LINK), and with no metallic masses in the vicinity as
follows:
- activate the sensor;
- choose the frequency medium, high, low
- press the RESET button
- the device will initiate the self-adjusting phase
- the leds "L1" "L2" "L3" "L4" will light up sequentially.
- the device will stabilise at the best setting and the leds "L3" and "L4" will light up.
Note: If led "L3" doesn't light up it means the device has not been correctly calibrated
as the installation is not optimal. To overcome this problem, move the position of the
three-way selector switch (this will modify the characteristics of the electromagnetic
field) as follows:
- if the overall length of the coil is close to minimum (20 m)
- if the overall length of the coil is close to maximum (40 m)
Once you have moved the switch reset the device and carry out a new calibrating cycle.
Led functions L1 L2 L3 L4

L2 which is normally off; indicates an insufficient coil when lit (control the length of
L3 which is normally lit indicates that the power is on.
L4 which is normally lit switches off when the device detects a metallic mass.
Selecting the sensitivity level.
The sensitivity level is determined by the position of the four dip switches.
The dip-switches have different values with the highest sensitivity level at dip 1 and
gradually diminishing (dip 2, dip 3) to the lowest value at dip 4. Possible sensitivity
settings are as follows:
a) All in the OFF position = maximum sensitivity
Power supply
b) OFF - ON - OFF - ON (sensitivity level 5)
230 Vac
c) ON - OFF - ON - OFF (sensitivity level 5)
24 Vac/dc
d) All in the ON position = minimal sensitivity
Note: After each sensitivity adjustment the device must be reset.

Note: When constructing the inductive coil a single cable with more than one pole
3x1, 4x1, 5x1 must be used, unused poles should be isolated and disconnected.
The serial connection point could be isolated using paraffin. The cable inlaid into the
ground must not move when subject to passing vehicles.
