Carburetor Adjustments
WARNING!
The saw chain will move during the
carburetor adjustment. Make sure
that the guide bar and saw chain
can not contact any objects and that
bystanders and pets stay clear of
the chain saw while the carburetor is
being adjusted.
IMPORTANT!
A clean and unrestricted air-flow is
essential to your saw engine's perfor-
mance and durability! Before attempting
any carburetor adjustments, inspect
and clean the engine air filter as re-
quired! Procedures for maintaining your
saw's air filter are described on page 16
in this manual.
Before starting the saw
I. Inspect saw chain tension, and adjust
if necessary. (See page 8.)
. Verify that the chain brake is disen-
gaged, and that the saw chain is free
to rotate.
Start the saw
Start the saw and warm the engine to op-
erating temperature. With the chain saw
on a flat surface and the engine running,
adjust the carburetor using the following
procedures:
WARNING!
The saw chain must never rotate at
engine idle speed.
Idle speed adjustment
Turning the idle speed adjusting screw
clockwise increases engine idle speed
while turning the adjusting screw
counterclockwise decreases idle speed.
Adjusted correctly, the engine should
run at a steady speed and the saw chain
should not move or attempt to move.
Using an engine tachometer, the recom-
mended idle speed is ,800-3,00 rpm
(min
). If a tachometer is not available,
-1
decrease idle speed until the chain stops
moving.
If the engine idle can not be adjusted so
that the saw chain stops moving when
the throttle trigger is released, imme-
diately stop using the chain saw and
contact an authorized Shindaiwa dealer
for assistance.

Adjustments for Emission
Compliance Engines.
IMPORTANT!
This chain saw is equipped with an US
EPA tamper resistant carburetor. The
low (L) and high (H) speed adjustment
screws are limited to approximately 1/4
turn from stop to stop.
Low-speed (L) mixture screw
(engine idling at operating tem-
perature)
With the engine running, slowly turn
the low speed (L) mixture screw
clockwise until it stops. Check engine
acceleration. Slowly turn the low
speed (L) mixture counterclockwise
until it stops (approx. 1/4 turn).
Check engine acceleration again.
Position the low speed (L) mixture
screw for best engine acceleration.
If necessary, readjust the idle speed
screw for an engine idle speed of
,800 - 3,00 rpm (min
-1
CAUTION!
Operating the saw at wide open
throttle for longer than 5 seconds
without a load could result in engine
damage.
High speed (H) mixture screw
The high speed (H) adjusting screw
will vary the maximum engine speed
with the throttle trigger fully de-
pressed by approximately 500 rpm.
Turning the high speed (H) screw
clockwise will increase maximum en-
gine speed while turning high speed
(H) screw counterclockwise (approx.
1/4 turn) will decrease maximum
engine speed. For most conditions,
turning the (H) screw counterclock-
wise to its stop will provide the best
engine performance during operation.
