Replacement Interval Guide
Mitsubishi recommends replacement every
60,000 miles.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle
must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an
INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of
valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt
failure is MOST LIKELY to occur.
A compression check of all cylinders should be
performed before removing the cylinder head.

3. Loosen tensioner bolt j
, push tensioner away from
7
belt and lightly tighten bolt.
4. Remove the timing belt.
IMPORTANT: For maximum timing belt system
life, replace all tensioners and pulleys during
timing belt replacement.
Installation
1. Ensure timing marks j
& j
are aligned.
5
6
2. Install the timing belt to the sprockets and pulleys in
a counterclockwise direction starting at the
crankshaft sprocket.
3. Ensure timing belt is taut between sprockets on
non-tensioned side.
4. Loosen tensioner bolt j
to allow tensioner to
7
operate.
5. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until
No.1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke with
timing marks j
& j
aligned.

6
NOTE: Do not turn crankshaft
counterclockwise.
6. Torque tensioner bolt j
to 18 ft. lbs.
7
7. Apply pressure, with thumb and finger only, to
timing belt at F and check that measurement
between back of belt and edge of cover is 1.18 ins.
8. Install components in reverse order of removal.
9. Torque crankshaft pulley bolt j
to 134 ft. lbs.
