Maintaining Shredder Hammers
WARNING
Accidental start-up. Before servicing or detangling, shut
down unit, allow to cool, remove keys, and disconnect spark
plug wire(s). Failure to do so could result in death, serious
injury, or equipment damage.
When the hammer cutting edges becomes dull or
rounded, it must be rotated or reversed. The four flat
hammers have four cutting edges and the four J ham-
mers have two that may be used before replacement is
necessary.
To reverse the hammers:
1. Remove the hammermill housing/shredder hopper
assembly. See
Removing and Replacing the
Chipper Knife
for more information.

3/8" wrench to remove the screw and locknut (A)
from one of the short spacers (B)
3. Remove hammer shaft (C), spacers (B and E), and
hammers (D and F).
4. Flip the J hammer (D) and flat hammer (F) 180°.
NOTE: Be sure to reinstall hammers and spacers in the
same order they were removed.
NOTE: J hammer (D) must be in the outermost position.
5. Reinstall the screw and locknut through the short
spacer and hammer pin.
6. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for the other three sets of
hammers.
7. Verify that two of the j hammers are facing out and
the opposite two j hammers are facing in.
8. Reinstall the hammermill housing/shredder hopper
assembly.
