Visual inspections
New Seasonal and Holiday lighting
sets should be checked and
inspected in accordance with the
manufacturer's instructions provided
with the set.
Don't throw away the box, keep it to
store the lighting sets in, it may have
information on buying replacement
lamps.
Older sets, which may have been
hurriedly dismantled following the
previous year's festivities and stored
for 12 months, need to be carefully
checked for any damage to the
lamps (light bulbs), lampholders and
conductors (wires).
The following are examples of
items that should be checked before
plugging in the set to the mains.
The flexible cable and lampholders:
is the cable in good condition?
is it free from cuts, fraying and
damage?
are the connections at each
lampholder sound?
are the lampholders free from cracks
or damage, that might give access to
the live cable or live contacts of the
lamps?
The lamps:
are they all in place, undamaged,
properly screwed or pushed in?
The plug/transformer
Check that the plug is not damaged.
Look for signs of overheating.
Check the fuse (if any), make sure it is
the correct rating.
IF ANY DOUBT, HAVE THE SET
CHECKED BY A QUALIFIED
ELECTRICIAN BEFORE USE OR
SCRAP AND PURCHASE A NEW SET.
Where the set is intended to be
connected to the supply via a 'plug-in
transformer', only use the transformer
supplied with the set. Otherwise if the
output voltage does not match the
voltage of the lamps overheating may
result.
Functional Tests
After the visual inspection and
correcting any faults found, including
tightening of lamps and replacement
of broken or missing lamps, plug in
and switch on the lamp set. Replace
any faulty lamps with ones of the
same voltage rating and manufacture,
check the box for details. Spare lamps
are usually provided with the set.
Lamps should not be removed or
installed with the supply on.
Only replace 'fused' lamps
(sometimes identified by a white mark
on the glass) with identical 'fused'
lamps.
Installation on Christmas Tree
Christmas trees because of the pine
oils, and particularly after being in a
heated room for a week or two, are
very flammable. Tree decorations
may also be flammable and should
be kept clear of the lamps as far as
possible. Christmas trees should be
mounted securely so that they are
unlikely to fall over, or be knocked
over by children or pets. They
