DIODE LASER SAFETY FILTER
A certified IRIS Medical® Diode Laser Safety Filter is mounted in the upper female
flange lock of the ROLS unit. This solid glass filter also serves to keep dust and
debris from contaminating the internal area of the system. Avoid touching or dam-
aging the filter surface. If necessary, clean the outer surface only with Volk
Precision Optical Lens Cleaner (POLC) available from Volk Optical. When installing
the ROLS unit, be sure the filter is clean and intact before using.
Caution
This diode laser safety filter removes only the diode laser wavelengths.
It is not an argon laser filter. A separate filter system is required when
using the argon or other laser.
The ROLS unit comes with a removable translucent Plastic Cover to protect the
laser filter and unit during transportation. Do not discard the cover. It may be stored
in the carrying case and should be utilized whenever the ROLS unit is removed
from the microscope.
ILLUMINATION
It is suggested that an appropriate diffusion or bullet-type fiberoptic light pipe and a
high intensity light source be used to provide
wide-angle illumination of the retina.
FOCUSING THE IMAGE
The lndirect Aerial lmage produced by Volk Vitrectomy Lenses is located external to
the eye and anterior to the contact lens. This is in contrast to the Direct Image,
located within the eye, as produced by a plano/concave lens.
Protocol
1.
Place the ROLS Reinverter in the Out position.
2.
Follow the appropriate instructions for using the plano/convex lens.
3.
Adjust the microscope until the fundus is in focus.
4.
Remove the plano/convex lens.
5.
Select the appropriate Volk Virectomy Contact or Self Stabilizing Lens.
6.
Follow the appropriate instructions for using the selected lens.
7.
Place the ROLS Reinverter in the In position.
8.
Readjust the microscope until the fundus is in focus.
CENTERING THE IMAGE
When the prism is engaged and the surgical procedure is being performed, you will
find that in order to center the image, reverse microscope motion will be required.
For example, if there is a peripheral tear at the 11:00 position and the physician
wishes to bring the tear to a more central position of the microscope field, it will be
necessary to move the microscope towards the 5:00 position and not toward the
tear which lies at the 11:00 position. Again, microscope motions should be made
opposite to what is normally done.
REMOVING THE REINVERTER
To remove the ROLS Reinverter from the microscope:
1.
Turn off the electrical power to the microscope and the attached micro-
scope accessories.
2.
Lock the microscope in an easily accessible position.
3.
Remove any accessories attached to the Beam Splitter, including the
Observer's Tube.
4.
Remove all microscope assemblies up to and including the Surgeon's
Scope.
5.
Install the Protective Plastic Cover on the reinverter then loosen the
thumbscrew to remove the reinverter.
6.
Remove the reinverter and place into the Carrying Case.
7.
Reassemble the scope(s) and the remaining microscope assemblies.
8.
Verify that all flanges are seated flush together. If necessary, slightly
rotate the appropriate assembly left and right until the exact fit is
achieved.
9.
Tighten all thumbscrews, reinstall accessories to the beam splitter,
unlock the operating microscope and turn on the electrical power to the
microscope and accessories.
CLEANING THE ROLS REINVERTER
HOUSING
The black external surface of the ROLS housing may be cleaned with a slightly
moist cloth.
Caution
To avoid damage to the reinverter, do not submerge the housing in any
solution or clean the ROLS Prism.
DIODE LASER SAFETY FILTER
The external surface of the Diode Laser Safety Filter may be cleaned with Volk
Precision Optical Lens Cleaner (POLC) available from Volk.
MAGNETIC LEVER HANDLES
The Magnetic Lever Handles may be washed in a soap and water solution, rinsed
and dried and sterilized by any method including auto-claving.
