Hammar LifeSaver Manual
A. How LifeSaver works
Congratulations on your choice of lifesaving equipment!
LifeSaver is a self-inflating horseshoe buoy for use on boats of all kind, large and
small. Being small and light, LifeSaver is easy to store and to use. Its size, combined
with its light weight, makes it easy to throw, and to throw accurately. LifeSaver
inflates automatically when it enters the water.
The horseshoe buoy (1) and the water-sensitive inflation mechanism (3)
are protected by a watertight casing (2). When LifeSaver is thrown it opens 1-2
centimetres, so that water can reach the water-activated part of the mechanism.
When LifeSaver enters the water, the mechanism operates and the horseshoe buoy
inflates. The open casing remains attached to the horseshoe buoy by a cord and acts
as a sea anchor (to prevent the buoy blowing away).
B. How to use LifeSaver
When accident happens (1) remove LifeSaver from its holder (2), or take off the clip
(3). Throw LifeSaver close. It's easy to aim right. (4) LifeSaver inflates itself! (5) Pull
LifeSaver over your head and tighten the recovery strap (6).
If LifeSaver does not inflate automatically, inflate with the mouthpiece!
If the clip is left in place when you throw LifeSaver, the
horseshoe buoy will not inflate when it enters the water.
To avoid injury, LifeSaver must always be thrown alongside
the rescuee, not directly at the rescuee.
C. Storage
LifeSaver can be stored in three ways, in a holder (accessory), in a specially made
stowing box (accessory) or protected from water with its clip in place. Remove the
clip before using LifeSaver. For optimum accessibility, we recommend keeping
LifeSaver in the holder or in the stowing box (without clip). It is best to locate the
holder where it is easy to reach from the helmsman's position.
If LifeSaver is removed from its holder or if the clip is not in place,
it opens 1-2 centimetres. This is normal. Close the casing and put
LifeSaver back in its holder, or fit the clip.
When LifeSaver is open: Protect it from water. If water reaches the
release, LifeSaver will inflate!
To avoid damage in case of unwanted inflatation make sure there is no
water where LifeSaver is stored.
D. Maintenance
LifeSaver is designed for maximum reliability and to be usable all year round, but
for optimum reliability it is important to look after LifeSaver properly. This means
checking sensitive parts annually.
Yearly maintenance
Open the casing and check the date stamp according to the description below.
Check that the casing is held together properly and appears to be watertight
when the clip is fitted.
On the side of the UML cartridge (3b) there is a date stamp (EXPDATE (month)
(year)). If the date has passed or if the green indicator is missing, LifeSaver must
be re-armed.
Use the LifeSaver re-arming kit. Follow the re-arming procedure. We recommend
that the complete function of LifeSaver is tested before re-arming. (throw LifeSaver
in the water)
NB! If the expiration date on the UML cartridge has passed and LifeSaver has not
been activated, only the UML cartridge needs to be replaced. Ask your local retailer
about replacement cartridges.
When LifeSaver is not in use
LifeSaver is designed to be used all year round, but if it is not being used during the
winter it is best to store it indoors in a dry place.
E. Re-arming
(See the illustrations E+G)
After use, LifeSaver must be checked and re-armed. LifeSaver
Re-arming kit LS 100 is used for this purpose.
For LifeSaver to work perfectly it is important that it is clean and dry before it is
re- armed. If LifeSaver has been used in salt water it must be rinsed and thoroughly
dried. The best way to make sure the horseshoe buoy is dry is to leave it spread
out in room temperature for 48 hours. Turn it over once during that period. When
the horseshoe buoy is dry, the air must be removed from it. Use the mouthpiece
for this.
6
1. Re-arming the automatic inflation mechanism:
• Unscrew the UML cartridge (3b).
• Unscrew the gas cylinder (3c).
• Check the inflation mechanism. Press in the H-shaped button to check that
the pin that operates the gas cylinder works.
• Screw on a new UML cartridge. Tighten it.
• Finally, screw on a new gas cylinder (3c). Tightly!
2. Before you fold the horseshoe buoy you must remove all the air
from it:
• Remove the protective cap from the mouthpiece, turn it over and press it
against the opening. This opens the valve which keeps the air in the buoy. All
the air must be evacuated from the buoy so that it can be folded and packed.
3. Folding the horseshoe buoy
• Place the cord (7) in the part of the casing opposite to where it is fastened
and place the folded horseshoe buoy with the inflation mechanism (3) turned
upwards on top of the cord. Fold the recovery strap once and then place it
alongside the horseshoe buoy. Apply a rubberband with three turns.
• Close LifeSaver and make sure the opening mechanism is correctly placed in
the slot on both sides. Make sure it is properly fastened! Check that the casing
opens 1-2 centimetres but not more. Put LifeSaver in its holder or fit the clip.
NB! • Do not wrap the cord around the horseshoe buoy!
• Only use LifeSaver Re-arming kit LS 100

Risks associated with incorrect use
of LifeSaver LS101
Incorrect use or storage
Make sure that the LS101 is stored or installed where it is not likely to be
damaged. The LS101 contains a pressurised container. This may mean that
it must not be carried in an aircraft. For the same reason, the LS101 should
not be exposed to high temperatures (max 50 °C). The LS101 should not be
stored together with fuels, solvents or other chemicals.
A damaged LS101 may self-inflate even if it is in its holder or if the clip is
fitted. Make sure that a damaged LifeSaver is stored in a dry place.
Incorrect re-arming
If the horseshoe buoy is not re-armed and packed correctly, using the spe-
cified genuine parts, it may inflate spontaneously or it may fail to self-inflate
fully or at all. For correct re-arming, see the packing instructions supplied
with the re-arming kit.
When the clip is fitted
When the need arises to throw the LifeSaver to a rescuee, the clip must be
removed. If the LS101 is thrown with the clip in place, it will not self-inflate
automatically.
In an emergency
To avoid injury, LifeSaver must always be thrown alongside the rescuee, not
directly at the rescuee. If LifeSaver does not inflate automatically, inflate with
the mouthpiece.
