CLEARING A JAM
1. Wait for 24 hours. The unit will attempt to clear the jam automatically.
2. If the mixing chamber is full, remove some material. Locate and remove any
jammed item. Often it is a large, hard, or fibrous item, or a wad of paper, string,
or stringy material.
3. Press the OK button to resume normal operation.
4. In the future, avoid whatever jammed or cut it smaller. Don't overload.
PET WASTE
Your NatureMill composter can safely compost pet droppings. This is because the
temperatures inside the machine reach or exceed 140F (60C), which destroys
almost all harmful bacteria. Please follow these guidelines:
Always use caution when handling pet waste. Wash hands after handling.
Be sure your pet is healthy and disease free.
Pregnant women should never handle cat droppings, due to toxoplasmosis risk.
First become familiar with your composter using food waste only.
Keep your composter outdoors, to avoid carrying pet waste indoors.
Pet waste is generally "green" waste: add sawdust pellets to balance the
reactions. The compost may dry out, so add some water as needed.
Do not use pet waste compost with edible plants, unless you are an experienced
gardener familiar with such growing methods.
Do not attempt to compost pet hair. It will jam.
For kitty litter or other manufactured products: read the ingredients list or contact
the manufacturer to determine if the contents are safe and chemical free.
Biodegradable litter is best. Most kitty litter is "brown" material.
Some bedding materials (i.e. for rabbits, hamsters) and some kitty litter may
contain additives which could cause odors in compost. Experiment with a small
amount of these first.
RESET, CLEANING, MAINTENANCE
The wait light may come on for up to 48 hours to allow sufficient time to compost.
To override this delay, hold the OK button for 5 seconds.
At any time you can "reset" the unit: hold the selector button
Remove any stray compost from the rubber seal in the lid, and discard any stray
compost or liquid from under or behind the cure tray.
Periodically, scrape compost that may stick to the walls of the mixing chamber.
Never use soaps, sprays, or chemicals. DO NOT clean the mixing chamber.
Rinse the trays when you empty the compost.
The filter on PRO models should last a lifetime. On all other models, replace the
air filter every 5-10 years if odors develop. The filter is located deep inside the
unit, and is not visible anywhere. See www.naturemill.com.

TIPS TO IMPROVE COMPOST QUALITY
Healthy compost is spongy, moist, granular, and warm with a mild "earthy"
aroma of damp wool, mushrooms, parmesan cheese, or coffee. Steam and heat
rising are good signs. Here are some tips to improve compost quality:
Add more sawdust pellets: "Green" items alone (fruit, vegetables, and meats)
produce wet compost and sour odors similar to ammonia or trash. Refer to
STEP 1.
Add a cup (250 ml) sawdust pellets and a tablespoon (15ml) of
baking soda. Then let the machine run undisturbed for 2-3 days with the lid
tightly closed and the power on. Sawdust is a waste product, so composting it
reduces landfill.
Visit www.naturemill.com/free to learn how to get free pellets. This is the best
type of sawdust because it is dry and dust-free. You can often get free sawdust
at local lumber yards. It must be from dry, untreated, unpainted wood.
Add baking soda: add one tablespoon (15ml) and wait 12-24 hours. Too much
baking soda can damage the compost cultures.
natural acidity level found in most foods.
Don't overfill the mixing chamber or jams and uneven mixing can occur.
Leave compost in the unit as long as possible, in both the mixing stage and
the cure tray stage. Ideally, allow 7 days or more between cycles as you
continue to fill the mixing chamber.
Cut items smaller, especially items visible in the final compost. Avoid hard,
stringy, or fibrous items, or items that do not break down.
Dryness: If compost is dried out or dusty or crunchy, add more wet items (fruit,
lettuce, etc.) or add a cup (250 ml) regular tap water.
Wetness: If red cure tray is flooded at the bottom, or the small white drip tray is
overflowing, position the drip tray as per diagram. Add less fruit, lettuce, or
other wet items. Add more dry "brown" items, especially sawdust .
Mold is generally harmless and indicates healthy composting activity. Add
more sawdust pellets and fewer wet items to reduce wetness.
Texture: compost should be spongy and loose like mulch. If it is hard or chunky
or you recognize individual items, add smaller, softer items, allow more time in
the mixing chamber, and adjust moisture as above.
