When the solenoid valve is switched to automatic (factory setting, see Item 9.6 and
10.2), the device controls as follows:
Example 1: Current actual value in the aquarium: pH 7.80. You have set pH 7.10 as the
optimum value. Symbol for valve status shows "open" and "A" for automatic. CO
now added until a pH value of 7.00* is attained. The device then switches the solenoid
valve off and the symbol for valve status shows "shut" and "A" for automatic.
Example 2: Current actual value in the aquarium pH 6.80. You have set 7.20 as the
optimum value. Symbol for valve status shows "shut" and "A" for automatic. No CO
added. The device does not switch the CO
to 7.30*. The symbol for valve status now shows "open" and "A" for automatic.

(7) pH value, CO

The three parameters, pH value, CO
linked, as they are interdependent.
When CO
comes into contact with water, a certain amount of carbon dioxide is pro-

duced which reduces the pH value. The greater proportion remains dissolved in the
water in the form of gas and serves as an important nutrient for plants. Therefore CO
has two benefi ts: it reduces the level of pH in the aquarium, which is usually too high,
to a level conducive to fi sh and plants whilst at the same time providing plants with
their main source of nutrient. Thus luxuriant plant growth and lively, healthy fi sh are
guaranteed.
How much CO
is needed to maintain a particular pH value depends on the CH in the

aquarium. The higher the CH, the more CO
known, the CO
content can be calculated. The following table saves you making the

calculations and also shows the pH values which you can set as optimum value without
any risk to your fi sh.
In order to use the table it is vital that you have already measured the CH in your
aquarium using the JBL CH Test Set supplied.
