PLAY/BAIT LED INDICATOR
PLAY INDICATOR: W hen the Data Recorder is
in PLAY mode, LED w ill light and remain ON.
BATTERY CONDITION INDICATOR: W hen LED becom es dim or
does not light, batteries are weak and need replacing.
NOTE: AC Power Converter m ust be disconnected from 6V DC jack
to check batteries.
USING THE
PROGRAM LOCATOR
If you intend to record more than one program per tape side, start
the tape at the beginning (magnetized portion). Set the PROGRAM
LOCATOR to " 000" by pushing the RESET button. Record your pro­
gram on to the cassette, allow ing the tape to run at least 10 counts
past the end o f the program. Make note of the PROGRAM LOCA­
TOR num ber fo r the start and end of each program so you can later
easily locate the desired program.
To select a particular program later, start the tape at the beginning,
set the PROGRAM LOCATOR to " 000" and push the Fast Forward
(F-FWD) button. W ind the tape until the corresponding num ber for
the start o f the desired program appears in the LOCATOR window.
The digital PROGRAM LOCATOR does not indicate actual distance
in units of measure but only determ ines the relative p o sition of each
program. You may find it necessary to Rewind (RWD) or Fast For­
ward (F-FWD) a few co u n ts to arrive at the start o f the program, par­
ticularly if the program was recorded on another recorder.
PAUSE CONTROL
Your recorder is equipped w ith a convenient PAUSE control which
will stop PLAY and RECORD operation. Press PAUSE button to stop
PLAY or RECORD operation, and press again for continued operation.

REWIND/REVIEW (REW/REV)
REWIND (REW): W hile in OFF position (all b u tton s up), depress
REWIND button, to run the tape back to the beginning or to any
p oint o f yo u r recording. Depress STOP/EJECT b utton after you
have rewound the desired amount.
REVIEW (REV): W hile in PLAY position, you can m om entarily
review (or rewind) a portion o f the recorded tape. Push the
REWIND/REVIEW b utton and the tape w ill rewind until you
release it, then the unit w ill resume its normal play operation.
This feature allows quick scanning w ithout resetting the controls.
FAST FORWARD/PREVIEW
(F-FWD/PREV)
FAST FORWARD (F-FWD): W hile in OFF position (all buttons up),
depress F-FWD button, w hich rem ains depressed, to skip over
portions of the tape quickly. Depress STOP/EJECT b utton after
you have advanced the desired am ount of tape.
PREVIEW (PREV): W hile in PLAY position, you can m om entarily
preview (or fast forward) your recorded tape. Press and hold the
FAST FORWARD/PREVIEW button and the tape w ill advance. To
stop the tape, merely release the b utton and continue PLAY
operation.
NOTE: If the REVIEW or PREVIEW feature is used w hile in record,
the RECORD button w ill a utom atically disengage. This is to prevent
accidental erasure.
AUTOMATIC STOP
W hen the Data Recorder is in PLAY or RECORD m ode and then end
of the tape is reached, the unit w ill a utom atically sh u t itse lf o ff and
return the engaged b utton to its o ff position.
TAPE ERASE
There are tw o ways to erase tape:

2. By inserting TAPE ERASE plug, Accessory No. 5-1804, into the
MIC jack and pressing the RECORD button. W hen you have
erased the tape, the recorder w ill s h u t o ff autom atically.

CLEANING THE HEADS
Iron oxide particles from the m agnetic tape will, in tim e, build up on
the parts that com e into direct co n tact w ith the tape. These
deposits can som etim es prevent autom atic stop at the end of the
tape or cause incom plete erasure and a " m u ffle d " sound during
playback.
Clean areas indicated after every 40 hours of use.
W ith the cassette d o o r open, the parts indicated can be cleaned
(gently) w ith the optional head cleaner in Tape Care Kit No. 5-1715.
A nother convenient m ethod is to use the optional cassette head
cleaning tape, No. 5-1108.
PREVENT ACCIDENTAL ERASURE
W hen you have a recording you w ant to keep perm anently, break off
the rear left tab of the side you w ant to save as show n in the fo llo w ­
ing illustration:
W hen a cassette w ith the tab broken o ff is inserted into the tape
unit, accidental erasure is prevented by a lever in the m echanism
that keeps the REC b utton lever from depressing. Cellophane tape
can be placed over the opening if you later decide to record over the
original recording.
PLEASE NOTE: Your m achine is equipped w ith a cassette sensing
m echanism . This m echanism prevents the RECORD b utton from
being depressed w hen cassette is not in unit.
CHECK LIST
In case of d iffic u lty, check the fo llo w in g before seeking service:
Be sure DATA LEVEL control is properly set. Try increasing
and/or decreasing DATA LEVEL co n tro l setting in 1 or 2 in­
crem ents. The DATA LEVEL co n tro l setting, depending on the
com puter used, may be very sensitive.
Be sure the PAUSE b u tton is not depressed.
Be sure both the RECORD and PLAY b uttons are depressed
when recording.
Be sure recording tabs on the cassettes are not broken o ff when
trying to record.
Be sure Interconnect cables are properly and securely connected.
Be sure AC Adapter is securely plugged into the Interface Unit
and 120V AC power outlet.
