Introduction
Introduction to the HPS Centurion P Passive
Harmonic Filter
The HPS Centurion P Passive Harmonic Filter utilizes passive
reactor and capacitor components to address undesirable
harmonic currents drawn by 3-phase non-linear loads such
as VFD's, so the power source (electric utility or on-site
generator) does not have to supply them. In addition, the
HPS Centurion P Passive Harmonic Filter can also offset
lagging reactive fundamental currents drawn by 3-phase
load to improve the power factor. The elimination of these
undesirable current components results in a nearly pure
sinusoidal current with a reduced rms magnitude drawn
from the power source. This results in substantial overall
power savings, increased reliability of power distribution
equipment, and conformance to ANSI/IEEE 519-2014. The
HPS Centurion P Passive Harmonic Filters are designed
to mitigate a broad range of harmonics (5th, 7th, 11th,
13th, etc) produced by a 6-pulse VFD or other rectifier
load. Please contact HPS Technical Support for assistance
with sizing HPS Centurion P Passive Harmonic Filters for
applications other than VFD's with a 6-pulse diode front
end.
The HPS Centurion P Passive Harmonic Filter can be
supplied as an open type unit or in a Type 3R enclosure.
The Type 3R enclosure has provision for cable entry from
the side or the bottom (refer to Appendix A for details).
Warnings
This guide covers the recommendations for the installation,
operation and maintenance of HPS Centurion P Passive
Harmonic Filters which utilize DH type enclosures. It is
emphasized that these abbreviated instructions should
be used in conjunction with all standards and local codes
covering such work and should be referenced accordingly.
These recommended practices are for general applications
and any special requirements should be referenced
back to Hammond Power Solutions (HPS) and/or their
representative.
It is further recommended that installation work be
governed by all applicable National, State and Local
codes standards and regulations and ANSI/IEEE C57.94.
This is the IEEE recommended practice for Installation,
Application, Operation and Maintenance of Dry-Type
Distribution and Power Transformers. All work should
be performed in accordance with NFPA 70E Standard
for Electrical Safety in the Workplace and CSA Z462,
Workplace Electrical Safety. Always use appropriate
personal protective equipment (PPE).

Important Note:
Electrical equipment should be installed, operated,
serviced, and maintained only by qualified personnel. No
responsibility is assumed by HPS for any consequences
arising out of the use of this material.
This manual contains warnings to observe in order to
ensure personal safety and prevent property damage.
Read these instructions carefully and look at the
equipment to become familiar with the device before
trying to install, operate, service or maintain it. The notices
referring to personal safety are highlighted in the manual
by a safety alert symbol, notices referring only to property
damage have no safety alert symbol. These notices shown
below are graded according to the degree of danger. If
more than one degree of danger is present, the warning
representing the highest degree of danger will be used.
DANGER
DANGER indicates an imminently
hazardous situation which, if not
avoided, will result in death or serious
injury, and/or substantial property
damage.
WARNING
WARNING indicates a potentially
hazardous situation which, if not
avoided, can result in death or serious
injury, and/or substantial property
damage.
CAUTION
CAUTION indicates a potentially
hazardous situation which, if not
avoided, can result in minor or
moderate injury and/or property
damage.
