Operation Advice
l Remove the MacPherson spring strut.
l Select pressure plates 4 according to the table, page
12 and mount on the spring compressor. Tighten the
bolts 3 firmly.
Drive the pressure plates 4 apart to match the length
of the spring and to compress as many windings as
possible.
l Fasten the spring strut in a suitable clamping device.
l Place the spring strut compressor onto the spring.
Take care that the seating of the spring windings in
the pressure plates 4 is correct.
l With an impact wrench or a ratchet spanner, turn the
drive nut 1 to the right until the upper support bearing
is free. Additional compressing of the spring is
permitted.
l Replace the spring strut cartridge and remount the
upper support bearing. Expand the old spring again
or replace by a new spring:
- Fully expand the old spring by turning the drive nut
to the left.
- Place a new spring in the spring strut compressor
and compress.
- Place the spring strut compressor together with the
spring onto the spring strut.
Take care that the position of the spring is
correct. Mount the support bearing.
- Extend the spring strut compressor until it can be
taken off the spring.
l The spring strut can then be remounted.
Additional compression is not possible when
the windings of the spring are in contact with
each other.
Do not continue to drive when the upper
or lower travel ends are reached.
When the spindle is overloaded, the safety pin breaks
which must then be replaced (C).
1. Drive out the broken pin 5 with a drift pin.
2. Align the drillings of the spindle and the drive nut and
drive in a new spring pin of 3 x 26 mm + 5 x 26 mm
dia., ISO 2338 A.
Conical Springs
The use of the spring strut compressor on conical springs
is permitted only when the spring centre line and the
compressing device 2 are parallel. For this purpose, use
the pressure plates suitable for conical springs.
Maintenance and Cleaning
l Always keep the unit clean.
l For all inquiries and spare parts ordering, please
include the article number in all cases.
l Grease the guide spindle if necessary, however, at
least every six months.
