power supply led will turn on) and check that the yellow led
indicating that the cells are being charged is also on.
In order to ensure cell integrity and avoid shipping problems, the
Astra torch is supplied with discharged cells.
For perfect torch operation, fully re-charge the cells (it takes 14
hours if the cells are fully discharged).
In case of partial re-charging due to only partially discharged cel-
ls, calculate re-charging time according to the following formula:
Rated cell capacity (mAh) x Recharging factor (F)
------------------------------------------------------------------------=Re-charging time.
Re-charging current (mA)
(the re-charging factor F is equal to 1.4 for the Ni-Cd ENERGIZER
used in the Astra torch).
The standard battery-charger supplied by Cressi-sub (code no. SJ
540002) supplies a 500 mA current, namely 1/10 of the cells capa-
city, with stabilized re-charging current, without any harm to the
cells even when exceeding the right re-charging time. However,
compliance with recommended re-charging times is advisable (14
hours with fully discharged cells, and proportionally less for partial
re-charging). A 20 hour re-charging should in no case be exceeded.
An empirical although practical way to check that the cells are
charged is by assessing their temperature. When they are fully
recharged, the energy surplus turns into heat. If the cells become
hot, re-charging should be discontinued.
In the long run, cell life may be reduced by frequent prolonged
re-charging beyond maximum re-charging time.
After re-charging and before assembling the torch again, allow
the cells to cool off in a ventilated place for at least 30 minutes,
especially if they have been overcharged.
To ensure the best performance of your rechargeable Astra torch,
carefully follow the instructions and recommendations of the fol-
lowing chapter.

6. 1. - INSTRUCTIONS WHEN RE-CHARGING THE CELLS

Fully re-charge the cells when you use your Astra torch for the
first time (cells are supplied discharged);
Re-charge the cells keeping the torch open and the switch off,
with the lock-off switch on;
Before re-assembling the torch, wait at least 30 minutes from re-
charge completion;
Only use cells specified by Cressi-Sub (see page 9);
DO NOT invert the cell polarity inside the battery pack;
DO NOT recharge standard D size 1.5V batteries;
DO NOT use "consumer" or blistered batteries of which you do
not know the specs;
Always charge cells belonging to the same battery pack,
namely cells bought at the same time: in any case never replace
only some of them;
Do not charge nor use battery chargers of different makes or
capacities;
Do not charge nor use the torch by putting together rechargea-
ble cells and standard 1.5V batteries in the battery pack;
Do not re-charge cells when they are still hot from use;
Do not re-charge cells when battery fluid is leaking or the bat-
tery case warped;
Do not re-charge lead batteries;
Do not fully discharge the cells: when the light output dimini-
shes, namely when the torch burn time is about to end, stop
using the torch and recharge the cells;
Dead batteries must be disposed of in proper bins for separated
waste collection;
Use the Astra torch in the water.
