- Switch off the chain saw engine before releasing the chain brake.
- Do not let the saw touch the ground when it is running.
- The chain saw heats up considerably during operation. Be careful not to touch the hot parts of the saw
with unprotected parts of your body.
- Always stand to one side of the intended fall line of the tree to be cut.
- When making several cuts, the chain saw must be switched off between cuts.
8. CHAIN BRAKE / HAND GUARD
WARNING
A loose chain can jump off the guide bar while cutting and wear the guide bar and chain. A chain
that is too tight can damage the chain saw. Either situation, chain too loose or too tight, can cause
serious personal injury.
All chainsaws are equipped with a chain brake/hand guard that stops the chain in motion within
milliseconds, helping to reduce the risk of kickback, a rapid upward movement of the guide bar that occurs
when the guide bar chain accidentally strikes an object or gets caught in the cut.
The hand guard also protects the left hand in case it slips from the front handle.
When the chain brake is activated, the movement of the chain is stopped abruptly and the power supply
to the motor is interrupted immediately.
The purpose of the chain brake is to reduce the possibility of injury due to kickback. However, the chain
brake cannot provide the intended measure of protection if the saw is operated carelessly.
The chain brake is disengaged (the chain can move) when the brake is pulled back and locked. This is the
normal operating position (Fig. 1A).
The chain brake is engaged (chain cannot move) when the brake is in the forward position (Fig. 1B).
Note: The engine will not start if the chain brake is in the engaged position.
WARNING
The chain brake must not be used to start and stop the chain saw during normal operation.
