damaged, the De-Icer should be discarded. Altering the electrical cable in any way will void
the warranty.
• Store De-Icer indoors after the winter season.
Installation
ATTENTION
WARNING: Caution should be taken when working near frozen ponds. Never walk on thin
ice. Your safety should always be the highest priority.
The Atlantic Pond De-Icer is designed to maintain a small area of water ice-free, to ensure
gas exchange when the pond's surface would otherwise be sealed off from the air by a solid
covering of ice. The De-Icer will not completely clear the pond of ice, or warm pond water
significantly. The De-Icer cannot melt already-formed ice and should be placed in the water
before the pond freezes. If the pond surface is already frozen, DO NOT CHOP OR BREAK THE
ICE AS THE SHOCK WAVES MAY STRESS OR KILL POND FISH. Fill a pot of suitable size with
boiling water, attach a cord to it and place it on the ice. The hot pot will eventually melt a hole
through the ice. Once a suitably large hole is created, place the unit in the pond water.
WARNING: De-Icer must float for proper operation. Do not install under pond
netting where heavy snow or debris might force the De-Icer below water level.
Operation
Once installed, plug the De-Icer into a GFCI-protected 120v outlet. The indicator light will glow
green as the De-Icer runs an initial test of the 300-watt heating element. The De-Icer will run the
test every time it is plugged in, regardless of water temperature, to confirm that the heater and
sensors are working. If the pond is not yet frozen, the heater will switch off and the indicator light
will turn blue as the De-Icer goes into standby mode. Designed to respond only to prolonged
temperatures changes, the De-Icer will ignore short-term temperature spikes, staying in standby
until the pond begins to ice over.
As the water freezes, the De-Icer will enter heating mode and the indicator light will glow green.
The De-Icer will begin to heat the water immediately surrounding the housing. When the ring of
water around the De-Icer is sufficiently warm, the heater will shut off, dropping electrical
consumption to near zero. The heater will come back on as the water around the De-Icer cools
again. The De-Icer will automatically maintain a small opening in the ice at the surface of the
frozen pond to allow gas exchange. By economically keeping a small area of water ice-free, the
De-Icer allows oxygen into and CO
ice all winter. This unit has been tested in temperatures below 0° Fahrenheit.
