Notes:

Special modes of operation
Real Time Counter
The real time counter can be used in two ways:
1.
Elapsed Time Indication (CONS)
The counter reads [0:00] "CONS" and the Tape Size indicator
reads "C90" when the power is first turned on. After inserting a
cassette, press the TAPE SIZE selector button [5]. Each press ad-
vances the Tape Size indicator once, from C90 to C120, C46, C60
and then back to C90. Set the length of the cassette to be used
before starting playback or recording.
When tape transport begins in the record or play mode, the
counter will begin registering the elapsed time. (If you turn the
cassette over without resetting the counter, the total time includ-
ing the first side will be displayed.) The two digits on the left side
display minutes and the two digits on the right display seconds.
To return the counter to [0:00], press the RESET button [3].
2.
Remaining Time Indication (REMA)
The real time counter can also be used to show the amount of
time remaining on a cassette as it is being recorded or played
back. (The time remaining on the side of the cassette being
played or recorded is displayed.)
1) Set the proper tape length using the TAPE SIZE selector but-
ton
[ 9 ] .
2) Press the REMA/CONS button [4] to switch the real time
counter to the "REMA" (remaining) time mode. The counter
will then read [ ~~~
—7 ].
3) Begin playback or recording. The real time counter will first
read [CALC] for a few seconds and then show the time
remaining on that side of the cassette.
4) lf you accidentally set the wrong tape length, press the TAPE
SIZE selector button again to set the correct length (without
stopping playback or recording) to obtain the correct remain-
ing time reading.

To Obtain the Most Accurate Time Indications Possible:
The real time counter is not a clock, so there may be slight dif-
ferences between the tape transport time as shown by the
counter and the actual time that has elapsed over that period.
Small differences in tape lengths between different manufacturers
can also cause slight errors. To obtain a more precise reading of
remaining time near the end of a cassette, repeat the remaining
time calculation procedure. If you insert a cassette of a different
length, use the TAPE SIZE selector button to set the new length.
@ The remaining time is automatically recalculated when the
remaining time counter reaches [6:00]. The display changes
briefly to [CALC], then the new (more accurate) remaining time
is displayed.
Notes:
1) If you select the wrong tape size, the remaining time reading
will differ significantly from the actual time remaining on the
cassette.
2) The correct elapsed time is maintained even when the deck is
in the remaining time mode.
3) The RESET button is used to reset the elapsed time reading.
4) When using a tape size other than those included in the Tape
Size indicator settings, set the Tape Size indicator to the size
closest to that of the cassette being used. In such cases there
will be a certain discrepancy between the actual elapsed and
remaining times and the values displayed. Slight differences
im the time displayed can also be caused by variations in the
Internal construction of different cassettes.

Using the Auto Accubias Buttons
1.
Insert a cassette.
2. Pressthe @ REC and I PAUSE buttons [7] to put the
deck in the record/pause standby mode.
3. Press the Auto Accubias START button [6] (on the left). Tape
transport will now begin as the Accubias TUNED indicator
flashes on and off to show that the bias is being adjusted
automatically.
4. When the bias has been set to the optimum point, the Ac-
cubias TUNED indicator will remain lit, the tape will be
automatically rewound to the position from which Accubias
operation was begun and the deck will return to the
record/pause standby mode.
5. This completes the Accubias adjustment procedure. Now
begin recording in the normal manner.
6. To cancel the Accubias setting, press the Auto Accubias
RESET button [6] (on the right).
Notes:
1) The Auto Accubias buttons have no effect on the deck during
playback.

2) If you press the Accubias START button with the tape
rewound all the way to the beginning, the heads will en-
counter the tape leader instead of the magnetic portion. The
TUNED indicator will flash and then the OFF indicator will
light. If this happens, advance the tape to the point where the
magnetic portion begins, put the deck into the record/standby
mode and press the START button a second time.
3) Auto Accubias will set the recording bias to the optimum set-
ting for most cassette tapes. For some tapes, however, the op-
timum setting may lie outside of the Accubias adjustment
range. In this case, the bias will be set as close to the op-
timum position as possible and the TUNED indicator will light
less brightly than usual.
Using the Recording Calibration Control Knobs
The Dolby noise reduction system is set to a standardized level
optimized for normal position cassette tape. As a result, when dif-
ferent tape types are used, the recording sensitivity varies and the
full benefits of Dolby NR can not be obtained. Perform the follow-
ing procedure before starting recording operations to obtain op-
timum performance from the Dolby noise reduction system.
1.
Insert a cassette and press the Monitor button
so that the
SOURCE indicator lights.
2. Set the REC CAL switch [!1] to the ON position.
3. Adjust the Input Level Control Knob [13] so that the Peak Level
Indicator reads OdB.
e Set the Balance Control knob to the center position.
4.
Set the Counter Mode to CONS. Press the Elapsed Time
Reset button to set the real time counter to [0:00].
5.
Press the @ REC button followed by the mB» PLAY button to
put the deck into the recording mode.
6. Press the Monitor button [8] so that the TAPE Monitor in-
dicator lights. Adjust the REC CAL knob so that the Peak
Level indicators read OdB.
7.
After this adjustment has been made, return the REC CAL
switch [11] to the OFF position and press the «4 REW bution
to rewind the tape back to the [0:00] counter reading.
Note:
Be sure to return the REC CAL switch [11] to the OFF position
after completing calibration. If it is left in the ON position, the
muting circuit will interfere with tape playback.
Using the Repeat Modes
A single button is used to switch between the block and full
repeat modes. Each press advances the Repeat indicator in s-
quence from BLOCK to FULL to off and then back to BLOCK.
Neither indicator lights when power is initially turned on. Whe
one of the indicators in lit, the corresponding mode is active.

Block Repeat
Use this mode to repeat a selection or a specific section tp to
five times.

Switch to the block repeat mode using the Repeat button, 9]
