What is muscle mass?
This function indicates the calculated mass
of skeletal muscles (approximate value) in
your body. Human beings have more than
600 muscles. Muscles play an important
role (movement, posture) and use up
energy. As muscle mass increases (more
activity and exercise), the consumption of
energy (calories) rises and the body fat
percentage decreases.
Average skeletal muscle mass
( I nternational Commission on Radiological
Protection, 1975):
Women weighing 58 kg
Men weighing 70 kg
What is bone mass?
This function indicates the calculated bone
mass (guide value for bone mineral content).
Bone mass depends on your lifestyle. This
is why it is important to eat a healthy diet
and exercise regularly. Please consult a
specialist about the ideal values for you.
Average bone mineral content
(Rico et al. 1993):
Women aged
from 17 to 28 years
Men aged
from 17 to 28 years
Note: For the following persons it may not
be possible to calculate bone mass. Please
use these values only as a guideline.
– Elderly people or adolescents
– Women during or after the menopause
– Persons receiving hormone therapy
– Women who are breast-feeding
Athlete mode
Scientific studies show that the body
composition of performance athletes differs
greatly from that of amateurs and non-ath-
letes. That is why these scales can be used
to select between the Normal and Athlete
setting. To select Athlete mode, you should
intensively train for at least 8-10 hours per
week, practice enhanced resistance training
(power athletes) and have a resting pulse of
max. 60 beats per minute.

Error messages
If

Err
be due to various causes:

→ Remove and re-insert the battery.
Then tap briefly and audibly on the
surface of the scales with the ball of your
foot.
– You moved during measurement or did
not stay on the scales long enough.
→ Stand still on the scales for at least five
seconds.
– Too much weight (maximum: 180 kg).
– The contact between the soles of your
feet and the sensors is insufficient.
→ Place your feet on the sensors.
Note: Very dry and/or hard skin may falsify
the result. The measurement results will

have good blood circulation or are moist. To
avoid slipping, please always ensure that
the soles of your feet are not wet.
– The percentage of body fat is outside the
range of 5-50%
→ Repeat the measuring process.
– The percentage of body water is outside
the measurement range.
If
is indicated, this has the following
Lo
cause:
The battery is flat or too weak.
– Change the battery (Fig. B).
Then calibrate the scales, tapping briefly
and audibly on the surface of the scales
with the ball of your foot.
Do not use rechargeable batteries! Use
only batteries of the same type.
