A - CAUTIONS AND WARNINGS
6) Generalities
Installation and maintenance must be undertaken only by authorised, qualified & trained people,
in accordance with current local regulation.
In case of external damage, capacitors / capacitors banks must not be connected and not be
used in any case.
Discharging time has to be compulsory respected before any capacitor handling
A careful handling is required as the capacitor may still be charged after disconnection due to
faulty discharging device
Resonance phenomenon must be avoided by appropriate solution design. (i.e. solution with
detuned reactors)
Capacitors bank protection against short circuit and over current has to be properly designed
and implemented
Failure to follow cautions & warnings may result, in the worst case, in premature failures,
bursting and fire.
7) Discharging
In appliance with IEC60831-1 – Chapter 22, the capacitor must be discharged to 75 V or less
within 3 minutes. There must not be any switch, fuse or any other disconnecting device in the
circuit
Before any reconnection, capacitors must be discharged at least to 10% of rated voltage.
The aim is to prevent an electric impulse discharge in the application, preserve the capacitor's
service life and protect against electric shock.
3 minutes discharging time has to be respected before shortcutting the terminals and earth
connection before any maintenance operation
8) Service life expectancy
Electrical components do not have an unlimited service life expectancy. Capacitors are
subjected to loss of capacitance during operation with self healing effect. Self healing is mainly
generated by overtemperature, harmonic excess, overvoltage...
The maximum service life expectancy may vary depending on application on which the product
is installed and environmental factors where it is physically installed.
9) Harmonics
Check the voltage and current using a true RMS meter reading.
Ensure that the current through the capacitor doesn't exceed 1.3x Ir. A higher value may indicate
heavy presence of harmonics.
Ensure that the voltage doesn't exceed 1.1 x Vr.
Only power capacitors connected in series with detuned reactors must be used in applications
with high harmonic distortion. Detuned reactors will reduce harmonic distortion, avoid parallel
resonances, and protect the capacitors.
