Assembling Sockets and Accessories - Your Impactool will have one of several methods for retaining sockets etc. and accessories. The various
types are described below.
(Dwg. TPD1871)
Operating the Tool - Check that the voltage rating marked on the tool matches the line voltage of your facility. Insert the plug of the power cord
into the power receptacle and then try the switch to determine that the tool is operating properly.
Your impactool may have a combination switch to operate the motor and control direction, or a trigger switch for power with a separate means
of switching direction using a lever, rotating cap or shell on the body of the tool.
Note: Never attempt to change direction of the motor with the power switch ON.
Your impactool gains its effective action due to a rapid succession of relatively light rotary blows. Therefore, the stress produced on a fastener is
proportional to the length of time the hammering action is sustained. After a small amount of practice you will be able to judge the amount of
impact time required to obtain uniform tightening on a series of fasteners.
Avoid excessive impacting especially on Bolts and Screws.
Recommended Procedure for Determining Torque Requirements.
Make a trial setting on one or two fastenings by holding the tool on impact for less time than is required to produce the desired degree of
tightness, for example, two seconds on a 3/8 bolt or one second on a 5/16 bolt if using a medium duty tool, approximately three to four
seconds on a 1/2 bolt if using a heavy duty tool.
Increase the impactinq successively after checking each trial by means of hand torque wrench. Bear in mind, when checking a fastening, that
the torque required to loosen it will be considerably less than the torque that was required to tighten the same fastening. The loosening torque
may average 75% to 80% of the tightening torque depending on the condition of the contracting surfaces.
If the fastener has not been lightened to the desired torque after 8 to 10 seconds of impacting a larger tool should be used to obtain the
desired torque.
On many light gasketed jobs it will be found desirable to run each fastener down to a relatively light stress and then secure final tightening with
a hand torque wrench.
Maintenance
Ventilation - Accumulated dirt should be cleared from the air intake slots frequently to allow proper ventilation and prevent overheating of the
motor. Use a brush or low pressure air jet for cleaning.
Lubrication - Refer to the instructions covering lubrication for initial use of your tool as outlined in the paragraph, "Preparing Your Tool for Use".
After each twenty hours of use remove the hammer case without disturbing the armature, if the hammer case cannot be removed easily after
the screws have been disassembled, hold the armature in position by placing a screwdriver or similar blade on the armature fan and gently pry
off the hammer case with another screwdriver. If the motor fan of your tool is not accessible thru the outlet air slot use one or two screwdrivers
to pry the hammer case from its mating part. A light tap on the end of the anvil while holding the hammer case will also help to separate the
housings.

Ball Detent-Spring loaded retaining pin is shaped to permit quick assembly
or change of sockets etc. Available on 3/8 and 1/2 square drive tools.
Positive Detent-Spring loaded pin has a square end for positive retention
of sockets etc. A drift pin or a rod of suitable size must be used to depress
the retainer when changing accessories. Available on 3/8 and 1/2 square
drive tools.
Quick Change - A spring loaded collet type chuck integral with the drive
spindle with a ball detent to retain hex shank accessories. Available on
medium and heavy duty tools.
Retaining Pin and Ring - The square driver of the tool and the mating
accessories are made with thru holes. A pin is provided to be placed in the
holes when they are in line. A rubber ring or single coil metal spring ring
used to retain the pin. Available on heavy duty tools.
