Do not work with the chain saw raised above your head; do
not cut using one hand only (fig. 8).
Do not use the chain saw to remove roots or other objects.
Regularly check the slow running setting in order to leave a
suitable safety margin between slow running and chain
movement start. Have your chain saw checked by any IBEA
after-sales service center.
Be very careful on ground made slippery by frost or rain; the
operator should always stand above or beside the trunk to
be cut down.
DANGER WARNINGS (Kick-back)
This is one of the most dangerous events which may happen
during work: a kick-back causes the chain saw to be
catapulted towards the operator.
This may happen when the chain (in the upper quarter of the
bar head) unintentionally hits a solid object.
This risk occurs during branch cutting, when another branch
is unintentionally touched (fig. 9)
To prevent this risk, thoughtfully and calmly proceed as
follows:
- firmly hold the chain saw with both hands and cut at full
speed;
- watch the bar head;
- do not cut using the bar head and do not cut more than one
branch at a time;
- the working angle should not be too big; do not work by
keeping the chain saw high up above your shoulders;
- in order to perform dive cutting you need to be an expert in
this technique;- mind the trunk position and any forces which
might cause the slot to close in on the chain;
- make sure that the working chain is sharp and stretched.
- The IBEA company has taken special care with the chain
brake which will decrease under certain conditions the risk
of injuries from a kick-back, when this cannot be prevented.
Recoil (impact)
This will happen during cutting with the bar upper track
(backhand cutting), if the chain hits a solid object in the trunk.
Also in this case, the chain saw will rebound against the
operator.
Tension applied to the cut
A heavy tensile stress will be applied to the inside of the cut if
during cutting with the bar lower track, the chain gets stuck.
For this reason, we recommend that the hook be put in place.

CUTTING TECHNIQUES

Felling and branch cutting operations should be carried
out by skilled workers.
Felling work.
Before starting, check the following.
- No persons must be within the felling work range.
The distance from other groups of felling workers must be at
least two times and a half the height of the tree. Calls might
not be heard if this distance is not kept (fig. 10).
- Any felling worker must have ways of retreat available (A fig.
11); these shall be in a slanting direction behind the tree
falling path (B) and shall have to be kept free from any
obstacles.
9
- The work area must be free from branches, shrubs etc.:
remove any using a hatchet (fig. 12), stand firmly while
working.
The following should also be considered:
- tree inclination, branches inclination, wind speed.
Do not execute feeling work in the presence of strong
winds.
Cut the ribs of large-sized roots by cutting into them vertically
at first, then horizontally (fig. 13).
