• Move the knee side-to-side to check for sideplay. Side-play should be
minimal. If motion seems excessive or patient complains of noise or
instability, a loaner unit should be requested and the knee returned for
inspection.
• Check the compression of the stance-flexion bumper by placing heel on
ground and apply a force to flex the knee. If stance-flexion seems soft,
replace the bumper or increase the durometer of the bumper.
Cleaning
Wipe the knee with a soft cloth moistened with a small amount of kerosene.
NOTE: Do not use any solvent stronger than kerosene. Do not dip the whole
knee or pour solvent over the knee. The bearings and seals will be damaged.
Do NOT use compressed air to clean the knee. Air will force pollutants into the
bearings which may cause malfunctions and early deterioration.
Lubrication Guide: Figure J
There are 6 lubrication points on the knee, three on each side. One shot of
grease at each lube point is all that is required every 4-6 months. Use only
Ossur grease gun, part #2105, and the grease supported with the grease gun.

Frequently Asked Questions: Figure K
Q. What is your recommendation for sitting or getting in and out of a car with
Total Knee?
A.
When sitting or getting into a car we recommend explaining to the
amputee that they need to shift weight anterior to the alignment reference
line. This can be accomplished by having the amputee slide the prosthetic
limb slightly behind the sound limb when initiating knee flexion. By
shifting weight anteriorly, the knee will release, allowing the amputee to sit.
When getting out of a car if the knee has been extended in a locked
position, have the amputee push on the back link with their thumb to
release the knee.
Apply pressure with thumb to the points indicated to release knee.

Q. Is the Total Knee appropriate for amputees with long residual limb or knee
disarticulation?
A.
Yes. When using our 4-prong socket adapter A-114040 the distance
between the cosmetic knee center and the distal limb is only 25.5mm (1.00
inches).
Q. Is the Total Knee appropriate for amputees who have had a hip disarticulation?
A.
Yes. You should also incorporate the use of the internal spring extension
assist when fitting this type of amputee. The Total Knee has been used
successfully with both hip disarticulation and hemipelvectomies.
Q. What would be the reason for the Total Knee to abruptly unlock?
A.
There are several reasons why this may occur. The alignment reference line
may be too posterior; The extension assist may be adjusted too tight;
There may be too many shims under the bumper. Look at the pylon, it
should be vertical, and the knee alignment should be 0mm to 5mm
anterior to the pivot axis.
Q. How do we instruct the amputee to go down stairs?
A.
We highly recommend that you work with your amputee on descending
stairs at your facility. Proper gait training is essential. The heel should be
back on the step and the amputee will have to transfer their weight onto
the ball of the prosthetic foot, causing the knee to release in a natural
motion. With experience and practice, the amputee may be able to walk
step-over-step when descending stairs.
