3.4 GENERALRECOMMENDATIONS
Thewarranty of the generatordoes not cover itemsthat havebeen
subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full value
from the warranty, the operator must maintain the generator as
instructed in this manual.
Some adjustments wilt need to be made periodically to properly
maintain the generator.
All adjustments in the Maintenancesection of this manual should
be madeat least once eachseason. Followthe requirementsin the
"MaintenanceSchedule".
NOTE:
Once a year replace the spark plug and replace the air filter.
A new spark plug and clean air filter assure proper fuel-air
mixtureand helpthe engine run better and last longer.
3.4.1 GENERATOR MAINTENANCE
Generatormaintenanceconsists of keepingthe unit clean and dry.
Operateand store the unit in a clean dry environmentwhere it will
not be exposed to excessive dust, dirt, moisture or any corrosive
vapors.Coolingair slots in the generatormust not becomeclogged
with snow, leaves,or any otherforeign material.
Checkthe cleanlinessof the generatorfrequently and clean when
dust, dirt, oil, moisture or other foreign substances are visible on
its exteriorsurface.
,&,CAUTION!
,_
Never insert any object or tool through
the air
cooling slots, even if the engine is not running.
NOTE:
DO NOTuse a gardenhose to clean generator. Water can enter
the engine fuel systemand causeproblems,in addition, if water
enters thegenerator through c oolingair slots, some water will
be retainedin voidsand crevicesof the rotorand stator winding
insulation. Water and dirt buildup on the generator internal
windingswill eventually decrease theinsulationresistanceof
thesewindings.
3.=/.2 TOCLEAN THEGENERATOR
* Use a damp cloth to wipe exteriorsurfaces clean.
. A soft, bristle brush may be usedto loosen caked on dirt, oil,
etc.
. A vacuumcleanermay be usedto pick up loose dirt and debris.
. Low pressure air (not to exceed 25 psi) may be used to
blow away dirt. Inspect cooling air slots and openings on the
generator. T heseopeningsmust be kept cleanandunobstructed.
3.4.3 ENGINE MAINTENANCE
When working
on the generator,
always
disconnect
spark plug wire from spark plug and
keep wire away from spark plug.
3.4.4 CHECKING OILLEVEL
Seethe "Before Starting the Generator"section for informationon
checkingthe oil level. The oil level should be checkedbefore each
use, or at least every eight hours of operation. Keepthe oil level
maintained.
3.4.5 CHANGING THEOIL
Changethe oil after every 100 hours. If running this unit under
dirty or dusty conditions, or in extremely hot weather, changethe
oil more often.
,A CAUTION!
,_Hot
oil may cause burns. Allow engine to
cool before draining
oil. Avoid prolonged
or repeated skin exposure with used oil.
Thoroughly wash exposed areas with soap.
Use the following instructions to changethe oil after the engine
coolsdown:
1. Cleanarea around oil drain plug.
2. Removeoil drain plug from engine and oil fill plug to drain oil
completely into a suitable container.
3. When oil has completely drained, install oil drain plug and
tighten securely.
4. Fill engine with recommendedoil. (See "Before Starting the
Generator"for oil recommendations).
5. Wipe up any spilled oil.
6. Disposeof used oil at a proper collection center.
3.4.6 REPLACING THESPARKPLUG
Use Champion N9YC spark plug or equivalent.Replace theplug
every 200 hours. This will help the engine start easier and run
better.
1. Stop the engine and pull the spark plug wire off of the spark
plug.
2. Cleanthe area around the spark plug and remove it from the
cylinder head.
3. Set the spark plug's gap to 0.70-0.80 mm (0.028-0.031 in.).
Install the correctly gapped spark plug into the cylinder head
(Figure14).
