Servicing
the Air Cleaner
Do notuse pressurizedair or solventsto cleanthe air cleaner
cartridge.
Theair cleanerpreventsdamagingdirt, dust,etc.,from enteringthe
carburetor and beingforced intothe engineand is importantto engine
life and performance. T heair cleanerconsistsof a pleatedfilter. Never
run the enginewithoutan air cleanercompletely assembled.
Cleanor replacetheair cleanerevery 25 hoursof operation.
1.
Loosenscrewand tilt plastichousingcoveron sideof engine
down.See Figure18.
2.
Removeair filter from plastichousingcover and replacewith
cleanor newfilter.
3.
insert cover'stabs into slotsin bottomof base.
4.
Tilt cover up into placeand tighten screw.
NOTE:If the filter is torn or damagedin anyway,replaceit.
Checking
Engine
Oil
1.
Stopengineand wait severalminutesbeforecheckingoil level.
With engineon levelground,the oil mustbe to FULLmarkon
dipstick.
2.
Removeoil fill dipstickand wipeclean with cloth.
3.
Replaceandtightendipstick.Removeand checkoil level.Level
shouldbe at FULLmark.
4.
If needed,add oil slowly- recheck.Do notoverfill.
5.
Wipedipstickclean, replaceand tighten.Removeand checkoil
level.Oil levelshouldbe at FULLline on dipstick.
Donotoverfil.Overfillingwith oil maycause theengine to not start,or
hard starting.If overthe FULLmarkon thedipstick,drain oil to reduce
oil levelto FULLmark on dipstick.

Usedoil is a hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.

Whenengineis drainedof all oil, placeenginelevel. Refillwith
approximately18oz. of fresh oil. Fillto FULLline on dipstick.Do
notoverfill.Referto Gas And Oil Fill-Up in OPERATION section.

Replaceoil fill dipstickand tighten.
7.
Replacespark plugwire beforestarting.
Temperature of mufflerand nearbyareasmay exceed150 ° F (65°C).
Avoidtheseareas.
Changing
Engine
Oil
Onlyuse high qualitydetergentoil ratedwith APIservice
classificationSF,SG, or SH. Select theoil's SAEviscositygrade
accordingto the expectedoperatingtemperature. R eferto Opera-
tion sectionfor viscositychart.
Changeengineoil afterthe first five to eighthoursof operation,
and everyfifty hoursor every seasonthereafter. C hangeoil every
twentyfive hourswhenoperatingengineunder heavyload or in
high temperatures.
To Drain Oil
1.
Drainthe fuelfrom the tank by runningthe engineuntil thefuel
tank is empty.
2.
Disconnectsparkplug wireand keepit away fromspark plug.
3.
With engineOFF butstill warm removeoil fill dipstick.
4.
Tip uniton its side (sparkplug side up) to drain throughthe oil fill
tubeinto appropriatereceptacle.
Servicing
Muffler
inspectmufflerperiodically,and replaceif necessary.Replace-
mentparts for the mufflermustbe the sameand installedin the
samepositionas theoriginal parts,otherwisefirecan occur.
Cleaning
Engine
Dailyor beforeevery use,cleangrass,chaff or accumulated
debrisfrom engine.Keeplinkage,spring,and controlsclean.
Keepareaaroundand behindmufflerfree of anycombustible
debris.
Keepingenginecleanallowsair movement a roundengine.
Engineparts shouldbe kept cleanto reducethe risk of over-
heatingand ignition of accumulated debris. This isespecially
important ifcuttingtallgrass.
Donot usewater to cleanengineparts.Watercouldcontaminate fuel
system.Use a brushor dry cloth.
