SubDrive Connect Surface Pump
System Response Tuning
For surface pump applications, SubDrive Connect has 3 initial pre-configured settings for
system response: SLOW, MED, and FAST.
1. Verify the tank size is at least 20% of the maximum flow rate of the pump in GPM.
Example: A pump flow rate of 30GPM would need at least (30 GPM) x (0.20) = 6
gallon tank. Verify the tank precharge is 70% of the pressure setpoint.
2. As a starting point, select the system response based on pump type. If pump type is
not listed, use SLOW as a starting point.
3. Power-up the drive. Let the water system build-up pressure by opening the shut-off
valve located after the pressure sensor and open all water outlets (faucets).
4. Close the shut-off valve after the pressure sensor. Wait for the SubDrive to shut off
the motor.
If pressure regulation performance is not acceptable using one of the pre-configured
system response settings (SLOW, MED, or FAST), use the FE Connect mobile app to
configure a CUSTOM system response by following the instructions below.
1. Verify the Proportional Gain (P) value by opening the shut-off valve after the pressure
sensor and monitor the initial pressure. Repeat operation until the appropriate P value
is chosen.
a. If the initial pressure is +/-15% of the setpoint pressure, the P value is good.
b. If the initial pressure is less than 15% of the setpoint pressure, increase the P value.
c. If the initial pressure is more than 15% of the setpoint pressure, decrease the P value.
2. Verify the Integration Time (I) value by opening the shut-off valve after the pressure
sensor and monitor the stabilizing pressure. Repeat operation until the appropriate I
value is chosen.
a. If the pressure stabilizes within 10 seconds, the I value is good.
b. If the pressure stabilizes after 10 seconds, reduce the I value. If the minimum I
value is reached, reduce the frequency range.
3. Verify the Ramp Rate (R) value by opening the shut-off valve after the pressure
sensor, wait for the system to stabilize, and then close the shut-off valve to monitor
the shut-off time. Repeat operation until the appropriate R value is chosen.
a. If the shut-off time is less than 60 seconds, the R value is good.
b. If the shut-off time is more than 60 seconds, increase the R value. If the
maximum R value is reached, increase the minimum frequency.
4. Verify that the system can regulate on minimum flow by closing all faucets except
the one with the least flow and open the shut-off valve after the pressure sensor.
Verify that the system reaches initial pressure within 10psi, stabilizes within 10
seconds, and shuts off within 60 seconds.
