Always wear eye protection when operating or
performing maintenance on this tool.
Always turn off air supply and disconnect air supply
hose before installing, removing or adjusting any
accessory on this tool, or before performing any
maintenance on this tool.
Models 161 and 3161 Scalers require little maintenance
other than lubrication. However, after a long period of
service, they may become sluggish due to dirt or gummed
oil in the piston chamber. Correct this condition as follows:
For Model 161
Depress and hold the spring–loaded Lock Pin (8) out of
engagement with the teeth on the Barrel Cap (6). Unscrew
the Barrel Cap from the Barrel and withdraw the Piston (7).
For Model 3161
Replace the Cover Plate Gasket (3) if the Barrel (1)
and Barrel Cover Plate (2) have been disassembled.
Unscrew the Cover Plate Screws (4) and lift off the Barrel
Cover Plate and Cover Plate Gasket. Withdraw the Pistons
(7) from the Barrel.
For both Models
Wash each Piston in a clean, suitable, cleaning solution.
Dry them and and apply a thin film of Ingersoll–Rand
No. 10 Oil to each Piston. Insert each Piston in the Barrel
and assemble the tool.
For Model 161
Make certain the Barrel Cap (6) is securely tightened.
Periodically check Barrel Cap for tightness.

Preparing for Service
For Model 3161, remove and discard the seal from the
tapped boss on the Barrel (1). Be certain the Dead Handle
(10) is clean before attaching it to the Barrel.
Slide the Jam Nut Lock Washer (12) over the threaded end
of the Dead Handle and against the Jam Nut (11). Screw the
Dead Handle into the tapped boss, and tighten the Jam Nut.
The Dead Handle and Throttle of Model 3161 Triple Scaler
can be transposed from one barrel boss to the other so that
their position relative to the Barrel is optional. If a Dead
Handle is not desired on the Model 3161 Triple Scaler, one
opening must be sealed with a 1/2" pipe plug.
To clean the internal parts, pour 3 cc of a clean, suitable,
cleaning solution into the air inlet in the handle and run the
tool for not more than 15 seconds. Cleaning solution is
not a lubricant; do not exceed this time limit.
Immediately, pour 3 cc of Ingersoll–Rand No. 10 Oil into
the air inlet and run the tool briefly to lubricate the internal
parts.
