in doubt.
j) It is essential to assess the reliability and security of the entire
safety system you are relying on (adequate resistance of the
anchors (EN 795) and their correct positioning to arrest a fall
and prevent pendulum effects, correct positioning of the ropes
– e.g. no slack, protecting sharp edges, redundancy, etc.)
OPERATION OF THE DEVICES
Rope clamps are designed for progression along a working line
and are not meant to be used in a fall arrest system. Any
overload or dynamic loading of the rope clamp may damage the
anchor line.
Before and after each use it is essential to check carefully the
device and verify its integrity. Before each use carry out an
operational test of the safety system by test-loading it with your
body weight while secured by other means.
Figure 1: INSTALLATION ON THE HARNESS
Attach the chest ascender with a half-moon or a delta carabiner
to the harness's ventral attachment point (as shown on the
figure). Chest ascender should always be used in conjunction
with means of its fixation in the upper direction be it a chest
strap or purposefully made systems on full body harnesses.
Figure 2: ATTACHING AND REMOVING THE DEVICE TO
AND FROM THE ROPE
To open the cam pull the safety catch down and out and lock it
on the body of the device. Insert rope in the slot between
the cam and the frame of the device and swing back the cam in
the locking position by pressing the safety catch downwards
(Fig. 2A). To remove the device from the rope, slide the device
gently upwards along the rope to unload it and simultaneously
unlock the safety catch (Fig. 2B). Before starting to climb verify
that the device jams correctly the rope. Guard against anything
that might switch the device open or impede its correct working
(clothing, cobbles, mud, twigs...).
Figure 3: PROGRESSION ALONG THE ROPE
The chest ascender is designed to work in conjunction with a
hand ascender or a functionally analogue device. With work at
height rope access systems, double rope technique should be
applied with a fall arrester on the safety line. When the
adjustable anchor line is loaded by full weight of the user it
becomes a working line.
Slide the hand ascender upwards along the rope while hung in
the chest ascender. Step in the foot loop and pull yourself up so
that the chest ascender slides along the rope. Always keep the
device parallel to the rope direction. For short sections of
descent unload the device by stepping in the foot loop, push the
cam with your index finger in the extreme closed position so that
the cam detaches from the rope and lower yourself (3B).
Release the cam to reengage the rope.
Figure 4: PROGRESSION WITH THE AID OF THE
STRUCTURE (SELF BELAYING)
Follow guidelines on figure 4.
Because of a danger of a fall a 10 mm or thicker rope must
be used.
