7. Maintenance

7.1 Maintenance schedule

The specified service intervals must be
strictly observed for safe, economical and
fault-free operation.
Before each use:
● Check the oil filling level (
● Check the air filter (

After the first 5 operating hours or after
1 month:
● Change the engine oil (
Every 25 operating hours or every 3
months:
● Clean the air filter (

Every 100 operating hours or every 12
months:
● Change the engine oil (
● Check the spark plug (

● Replace the air filter (

● Have the inspection carried out by a
specialist dealer. STIHL recommends
STIHL specialist dealers.
The inspection focuses on the fuel filter
and valve play in particular.
Every 200 operating hours or every 24
months:
● Replace the spark plug (
● Check the fuel hoses and replace if
necessary. STIHL recommends STIHL
specialist dealers.

7.2 Checking and cleaning the air
filter
● Park the STIHL gardening power
tool on a flat surface. Clean the
air filter cover and housing.
● Loosen fastening nuts (1) until they turn
freely and remove cover (2).
● Remove filter element (3) and detach
foam filter (4) from paper filter (5).

● Check all parts of the air filter for
damage and replace if necessary. In
particular replace the filter element if
damaged.
Clean filters (4, 5) every 25 hours of
operation or every 3 months. Clean

filters (4, 5) more frequently if using the
STIHL gardening power tool in dusty
conditions.
● To clean:
Rinse foam filter (4) with soapy water –
dispose of contaminated soapy water in
an environmentally friendly manner.

Immerse a new or cleaned filter (4) in
fresh engine oil before installing –
squeeze out excess engine oil.
Tap paper filter (5).
● Assemble the air filter in reverse order.

7.3 Changing the engine oil

Engine oil should be drained from a
warm engine – warm engine oil
drains quickly and completely.

Danger of burns!
Do not touch hot parts of the
engine.
● Park the STIHL gardening power tool
on a flat surface.
● Unscrew the oil dipstick. (
● Remove cap (1) from oil drain valve (2)
and fit a suitable hose (3).

● Place a suitable oil collection container

next to the STIHL gardening power tool
– note the minimum capacity. (
● Open oil drain valve (2). To do this push
the valve towards the engine, turn
anticlockwise and then pull out.
● Empty all the engine oil through the
hose into the oil collection container.
● Close the oil drain valve in reverse
order, remove the hose and add fresh
engine oil. (

7.4 Checking the spark plug

Recommended type: RC12YC
(Champion)
Avoid damage to the machine!
An unsuitable spark plug can result
in damage to the engine.
● Park the STIHL gardening power tool
on a flat surface, allow to cool and
remove the spark plug socket. Clean
the area around the spark plug.
● Unscrew spark plug (1) using a suitable
spark plug wrench.
● Check:
Check insulator (2) for damage and
cracks, check electrode (3) for deposits

and excessive wear. Always replace

spark plugs in doubtful condition.
Measure electrode gap A using a
suitable gauge and, if necessary,
carefully correct:
A = 0,7-0,8 mm
