Be sure to note which splint you are using
and follow the instructions that apply to that
splint. Unless otherwise stated, these
instructions apply to all of the splints listed.
INDICATIONS
• To help prevent deformity from hypertonicity
• To support inflamed joints or to immobilize
joints after injury or surgery
CONTRAINDICATIONS
• Not for the acute phase of most wrist or hand
fractures
PRECAUTIONS
• This splint is to be fitted initially by a
healthcare professional who is familiar with
the purpose for which it is prescribed. The
healthcare professional is responsible for
providing wearing instructions and
precautions to other healthcare
practitioners, care providers involved in the
patient's care, and the patient.
• If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or
discomfort occurs, use should be
discontinued and a healthcare professional
consulted.
• Be careful that the straps are not so tight
that they interfere with circulation.
• After heating splinting material, always
check its temperature before applying it to
the patient.

• When opening bag after heating material,
avoid contact with hot vapors from bag.
CARE AND CLEANING
• The splint will lose its shape in temperatures
over 135°F (57°C). It should be kept away
from sources of heat such as ovens, hot
water, open flames, and sunny car windows.
• The splint can be cleaned with soap and
lukewarm water and allowed to dry thoroughly
before reapplication.
PROCEDURE
Splints made from AirThru material: These
splint blanks fit the right or left hand. Other
splints: The splint blank can be applied to either
hand—simply invert the splint blank.
1. Heat splint blank as follows:
Splint blanks made from AirThru material—
Soften these splints, which are packaged in a
heat-sealed plastic bag, in heat pan of water
at a temperature of 160° to 170°F (70°–75°C)
for approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Cut open
bag between heat seal and pressure-sensitive
strip. If reheating is necessary, return splint
blank to bag, close pressure-sensitive seal
completely, and heat.
All other splints—Soften in water heated to
approximately 160°F (70°C) until pliable.

materials for information about working with
specific splinting materials.) Remove from
heat pan and place on a towel on a flat
surface. Blot excess water.
2. Flare the web space by stretching the outer
ridge of the splinting material so it contours to
the web space (A).
3. If possible, place patient's hand in supination
to achieve a gravity-assisted position.
4. Mold the splint blank on the hand and forearm
as shown in B.
5. The splint can be trimmed and the edges
flared if necessary.
6. Apply appropriate straps. A completed splint
is shown in illustration C.
