Figures referred to in the instructions are
on page 7.
Be sure to note which splint you are using
and follow the instructions that apply to
that splint. Unless otherwise stated, these
instructions apply to both of the splints.
INDICATIONS
• May be used in the presence of arthritis,
tendonitis and cumulative trauma injuries, and
following sprains and strains
Rolyan AquaForm Zippered Wrist Splint
• For immobilizing the wrist
• May be used following tendon repair and to
stabilize wrist fractures
Rolyan AquaForm Zippered Wrist and
Thumb Spica Splint
• For immobilizing the IP, MCP, and CMC joints
of the thumb in addition to the wrist (can be
trimmed to allow IP movement)
• May be used for deQuervain's syndrome,
dislocations, tenosynovitis of the CMC joint
and gamekeeper's thumb, following healing
of scaphoid fracture, and following MCP
reconstruction
CONTRAINDICATIONS
• Not in the presence of severe edema and
reflex sympathetic dystrophy
• May not be recommended for the acute
phase of wrist fractures
PRECAUTIONS
• These splints are to be fitted initially by a
healthcare professional who is familiar with
the purpose for which they are prescribed.
The healthcare professional is responsible
for providing wearing instructions
and precautions to other healthcare
practitioners, care providers involved in the
patient's care, and the patient.
• If unusual swelling, skin discoloration
or discomfort occurs, use should be
discontinued and a healthcare professional
consulted.
• Be sure the splint does not impinge the
long extensor tendons of the thumb, the
superficial radial nerve, and the dorsal
branch of the ulnar nerve.
• After heating splinting material, always
check its temperature before applying it to
the patient.
CARE AND CLEANING
• The splint will lose its shape in temperatures
over 135°F (57°C). It should be kept away
from sources of heat such as ovens, hot
water, open flames, and sunny car windows.
• The splint may be cleaned with soap and
lukewarm water. It should be allowed to air
dry thoroughly before reapplication.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
The zipper pull will be on the outside of the
splint along the ulnar border when fabrication is
c omplete.
Customizing the fit (to be done prior to
heating splint)
1. Apply a stockinette gauntlet to cover the
hand, wrist, and forearm. If softening the
splint in a convection oven, use two layers
of stockinette, with more over newly healed
scars or skin grafts.

(Product No. A291-3) may be used

to pad the radial and ulnar prominences. Cut
the padding to fit and secure the pieces on
the prominence(s) to be padded. They will be
transferred to the splint after fabrication.
3. Position the splint on the patient to determine
if trimming is necessary. If so, mark trim lines.
4. Trim the proximal edge as follows. (If the
splint needs to be shortened by a small
amount, the excess may be folded over [see
instruction 14].)
— P osition the zipper pull at the distal border
of the splint.
— H eat the marked area in a heat pan of
water (see instruction 5).
— C ut along trim lines. Do not cut the zipper
or fabric. Trim along the zipper about
(6.4 mm) from the fabric (A).
— L ightly heat the splinting material that
is sewn to the zipper and extends past
the trim line. Also heat an equal distance
distally along the zipper. Dry the area.
— A pply solvent to the outside surface of the
splint in these areas.
— F old the fabric and splinting material to the
outside of the splint along the zipper and
adhere the surfaces (B). Be sure to allow
room for the zipper pull to move between
the folded-over portions.
Molding the splint
Keep the stockinette liner smooth and wrinkle-
free throughout splint fabrication and wearing.
5. Heat the

follows:
Heat in water at a temperature of
Heat pan:
160° to 170°F (70°–75°C) for one minute or
until transparent. Remove from heat pan at an
angle to let water drain off without stretching
the brace and place on a flat surface. (The
metal parts of the zipper will be hot.) Pat dry
with a towel. The fabric around the zipper
will be damp, but it will dry without special
attention.
Heat without overlapping
Convection oven:
or folding on a baking sheet with a non-stick
surface in an oven preheated to 195° to 205°F
(90–95°C) until transparent (softening may
take up to 10 minutes). Remove from baking
sheet and place on a flat surface.
6. Position the wrist and forearm with the radial
border up and the thumb in a functional
position.
7. Be sure that the zipper pull is on the outside
of the splint.
—
Wrist splint:
thumb hole (C).
—
Wrist and thumb spica splint:
longest extension on the distal edge of the
splint with the thumb (D). Be sure that the
splint edge follows the distal palmar crease.
For both splints, the body of the splint should
drape on either side of the radial border of the
forearm and the zipper sides should lie along
the ulnar border.
8.
Wrist and thumb spica splint:
portion of the splint extends on both sides of
the thumb. Beginning with either side, wrap
these two flaps around the thumb and overlap
them (E).
9. For both splints, starting near the thumb,
gently stretch the splint from the radial border
around the forearm and hand until the zipper
edges are touching. An even stretch of the
material will result in a generally even pull
on the perforations (F). The zipper should be
parallel to the ulnar border. For comfort, the
zipper should not be positioned directly over
the ulnar prominence.
10. Close the zipper gently to ensure proper

positioning of the extremity, the splint liner,
and the splint (G).
11. Allow the splint to cool thoroughly and harden
while on the extremity.
Modifying the fit
12.
Wrist and thumb spica splint:
portion may be trimmed to allow the IP joint
free motion. If trimming is indicated, lightly
heat only the area to be trimmed to avoid the
possibility that the splint may lose its shape.
13.
Wrist and thumb spica splint:
piece may be held closed with straps to allow
for fluctuating edema. It may also be bonded
closed by following these steps:
— L ightly heat the two edges where they
overlap. Be sure the areas are dry.
-T splint as
®
— A pply solvent to the areas.
— P lace the pieces together.
14. If desired, heat the proximal edge and flare
it back. This technique can also be used
to shorten the splint a small amount. For a
stronger bond, apply solvent to the area.
Gradually reduce the folded amount when
nearing the zipper (H).
Wrist splint:
be flared.
Wrist and thumb spica splint:
edge of the thumb piece may be flared.
Completing the splint
15. Secure the optional padding pieces to the
splint.
16. A completed wrist and thumb spica splint is
shown in I.
