Replacement Interval Guide
Saturn recommends replacement every
100,000 miles.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle
must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an
INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of
valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt
failure is MOST LIKELY to occur.
A compression check of all cylinders should be
performed before removing the cylinder head.

Remove & install
Special Tools
Crankshaft pulley holder – No.EN 46337.
º
Tensioner locking pin – No.EN 46330.
º
Tensioner pulley holder – No.EN 46331.
º
Special Precautions
Disconnect battery ground cable.
º
Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing
º
belt removed.
Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
º
Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation
º
(unless otherwise stated).
Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other
º
sprockets.
Observe all tightening torques.
º
1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
2. Remove:
Right hand front lower splash guard.
¡
Air cleaner assembly.
¡
¡
Accessory drive belt.
3. Hold the crankshaft pulley with tool No.EN 46337.
4. Remove:
Crankshaft pulley bolt j
¡
Crankshaft pulley j
¡
Timing belt upper covers j
¡
Timing belt lower cover j
¡
Timing belt guide plate j
¡
5. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until No.1 cylinder at
3
TDC.
6. Ensure the crankshaft sprocket timing marks j
aligned.
7. Ensure the camshaft sprocket timing marks j
aligned.
8. Screw in tool No.EN 46331 j
NOTE: Tighten tensioner pulley holder finger
tight only. Do not overtighten.
9. Loosen the guide pulley bolt j
10. Remove the timing belt.
IMPORTANT: For maximum timing belt system
life, replace all tensioners and pulleys during
timing belt replacement.
1. Undo and remove bolts j
tensioner j
2. Align the hole in the tensioner body with the hole in
the pushrod and using a press with a maximum
force of 2200 lbs. slowly press the pushrod into the
auto tensioner body j
3. Retain pushrod in position j
4. Install auto tensioner j
j

to 8.0-9.0 ft. lbs.

5. Ensure the timing marks j
6. Install timing belt to the sprockets and pulleys in a
counterclockwise order starting at the crankshaft
sprocket.
7. Ensure timing belt taut between sprockets on
non-tensioned side.
8. Torque guide pulley bolt j
9. Remove the pin j
tensioner to operate.
10. Remove the tensioner pulley holder j
11. Install timing belt guide plate j
12. Install crankshaft pulley j
13. Install crankshaft pulley bolt j
14. Turn the crankshaft six turns clockwise until
No.1 cylinder at TDC.
15. Remove:

16. Ensure the crankshaft sprocket timing marks j
aligned.
17. Ensure the camshaft sprocket timing marks j
aligned.
18. Install:
