¡ Align holes in the tensioner unit casing and the
pushrod, and insert a suitable Allen wrench to
retain pushrod in position j .

¡ Install dust boot to tensioner unit.
2. Ensure the timing marks j & j are aligned.

3. Install the timing belt to the sprockets and pulleys in
the following order, aligning the marks on the belt
with the marks on the sprockets j :

Crankshaft sprocket.
¡
Guide pulley (G1).
¡
Camshaft sprocket (CA2).
¡
Water pump pulley.
¡
Camshaft sprocket (CA1).
¡
Tensioner pulley.
¡
4. Ensure timing belt taut between sprockets and
pulleys on non-tensioned side.
NOTE: It may be necessary to turn the camshaft
sprockets slightly in order to install belt.
5. Install the auto tensioner j and torque the retaining

bolts to 20 ft. lbs.
6. Remove the Allen wrench j and allow the auto

tensioner to operate.
7. Install the timing belt lower cover j and the

crankshaft pulley j .

8. Check timing marks j & j are aligned.

9. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise until
No.1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke with
timing marks j & j aligned.

10. Install components in reverse order of removal.
11. Use tools Nos.09123-70010 and 09330-00021 to
hold the crankshaft pulley j and torque the

crankshaft pulley bolt j to 181 ft. lbs.

12. Refill the cooling system.
13. Install the battery tray and battery.

Replacement Interval Guide
Year:
1992-94 Lexus recommends replacement every
60,000 miles or 60 months, whichever occurs first.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle
must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as a
FREEWHEELING engine in which the possibility of
valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt
failure may be minimal or very unlikely. However, a
precautionary compression check of all cylinders
should be performed.

Special Precautions
Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing

belt removed.
Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
º
Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation
º
(unless otherwise stated).
Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other
º
sprockets.
Observe all tightening torques.
º
1. Remove battery and tray.
2. Drain coolant.
3. Remove engine splash guard.

Intake air duct and engine dust covers.

Accessory drive belt.

Fan clutch and fan pulley.

Air cleaner.

Power steering pump and move to one side

ADVERTENCIA: Este motor ha sido identificado
como Motor de Rotación Libre, en el que la

obstante, como medida de precaución se debe
verificar la compresión de todos los cilindros.

Precauciones especiales
NO girar el cigüeñal o el árbol de levas cuando

haya sido desmontada la correa de sincronización.
Desmontar las bujías para facilitar el giro del

cigüeñal.
Girar el cigüeñal en el sentido de rotación normal
º
(a menos que se especifique lo contrario).
NO girar el cigüeñal mediante el árbol de levas u
º
otras ruedas dentadas.
Respetar todos los pares de torsión.
º
Desmontaje
1. Desmontar el acumulador y la bandeja.
2. Vaciar el sistema de enfriamiento.
3. Desmontar la guarda inferior del motor.

Disconnect all spark plug wires from plugs and

distributor caps.
Remove spark plug wire clamps and spark plug

wires, disconnect high-tension wires from
ignition coils.
Accessory belt idler pulley.
¡
Left hand ignition coil and disconnect wiring
¡
connectors on timing belt covers.

Distributor caps, rotors and the distributor

NOTE: Note the right hand & left hand
identification marks on the distributor housings.

10. On LS models, remove the fan bracket j

11. Turn crankshaft clockwise until No.1 cylinder at
TDC of compression stroke with timing marks
& j

12. Use tools Nos.09213-70010 and 09330-00021 to
hold the crankshaft pulley j

13. Using puller No.09213-31021, remove the
pulley j
14. Remove the timing belt lower cover j
15. Check crankshaft sprocket timing marks aligned j
Removal
16. Remove the auto tensioner j

17. Remove the timing belt.
IMPORTANT: For maximum timing belt system
life, replace all tensioners and pulleys during
timing belt replacement.
1. Check and reset the auto tensioner as follows:
Remove dust boot and check auto tensioner for
¡
any oil leakage j
Push the auto tensioner pushrod firmly against a
¡
wall or floor, if the pushrod moves, replace the
auto tensioner.
Pushrod should protrude 0.41-0.45 ins. j
¡
replace the auto tensioner.
Using a hydraulic press with a force of
¡
220-2205 lbs., slowly press the pushrod into the
tensioner unit.
NOTE: Use a suitable washer to protect the
screw in the base of the tensioner unit.

11. Girar el cigüeñal hacia la derecha hasta el PMS de
la carrera de compresión del cilindro n
marcas de reglaje j
12. Utilizando las herramientas n

n o 09330-00021, sujetar la polea del cigüeñal j
sacar el perno de la polea j
13. Utilizando el extractor n
la polea del cigüeñal j
14. Desmontar la cubierta de sincronización inferior j
15. Comprobar la alineación de las marcas de reglaje
de la rueda dentada del cigüeñal j
16. Desmontar el tensor automático j
guía de correa j
17. Sacar la correa de sincronización.
IMPORTANTE: Para prolongar la vida útil del
sistema de la correa de sincronización, hay que
reemplazar todos los tensores y poleas durante
el reemplazo de la correa de sincronización.
1. Comprobar y reajustar el tensor automático de la
manera siguiente:
Desmontar la funda guardapolvo y comprobar si
¡
hay fugas de aceite en el tensor automático j
sustituir si es necesario.
Apretar el vástago de empuje del tensor
¡
automático firmemente contra la pared o el
suelo, si se mueve el vástago de empuje,
sustituir el tensor automático.
El vástago de empuje debe sobresalir
¡
0.41-0.45 pulg. j
tensor automático.
