Roughneck E1049X series connectors and receptacles
Installation & maintenance information
To avoid electrical shock or electrocution, if any parts of the plug or receptacle appear
to be missing, broken or show signs of damage, DISCONTINUE USE IMMEDIATELY.
Replace with the proper replacement part(s) before continuing service.
To avoid electrical shock or electrocution, electrical power supply must be OFF before
and during installation and maintenance. Installation and maintenance procedure must
be performed by a trained and competent electrician.
EXPLOSION HAZARD
Do not connect/disconnect while energized.
EXPLOSION HAZARD
Set screws are an integral part of explosion protection and must be fully tightened while products are in use.
APPLICATION
These connectors and receptacles are designed for distribution of 1000 volts AC or DC
power up to 1030 amperes continuous duty for such applications as generators to motors,
generators to SCR center, SCR panel to motors on mud pumps, drill table, draw works, or
other heavy duty requirements for land or offshore drilling rigs. They are not designed for
interrupting current. DO NOT connect or disconnect while live. Turn power off and lock out
before making or breaking connections.
MALE CONNECTOR is used on power side of circuit for connection to portable cable.
Contacts are sized to match cable size and must be ordered for specific cable size.
Contacts may be attached to cable by crimping or soldering. See Table 1 for recommended
crimping dies and equipment. Connectors and cable shall be sized in accordance with
applicable electrical code.
FEMALE CONNECTOR is used on machine or motor side of circuit for connection to
portable cable. Contacts are sized to match cable size and must be ordered for specific
cable size. Contacts may be attached to cable by crimping or soldering. See Table 1 for
recommended crimping dies and equipment.
MALE RECEPTACLE is used on power side of circuit.
FEMALE RECEPTACLE is used on machine or motor side of circuit.
Receptacles must be mounted on panel or box in accordance with applicable electrical code
to provide proper spacing between units and full protection from live parts.
Receptacles are available with single or double bolt hole bus bar for attaching cable
terminals. Cable must be fully supported to prevent excessive strain on receptacle contact.
Receptacles must be mounted on non-magnetic panel such as aluminum or 300 Series
stainless steel to prevent excessive heating caused by induction heating when used in AC
applications. DO NOT USE AN ELECTRICALLY INSULATING MATERIAL AS MOUNTING
SHELL BOLTS PROVIDE EQUIPMENT GROUND FOR MOUNTING SHELL.
Panel mount connectors are to be mounted on a Zone 2 ATEX/IECEx certified
enclosure rated IP54 minimum.
Maximum thickness ¼" , minimum panel thickness 12 gauge, enclosure shall provide:
a.
protection from hazard,
b.
mechanical strength to prevent distortion and provide for internal parts when cables are
pulled or pushed in normal operation,
c.
compliance with applicable electrical code.
LOCKING MEANS – The male or female receptacle has a heavy metal shell with a locking
device to secure the mating plug to the receptacle housing. The male or female connector
has a heavy metal ring molded into insulator having a groove machined into it which
accepts the locking rods of the receptacle locking device or the clevis pin of the in-line
coupler. When the connector assembly is fully engaged with a receptacle and the locking
device is fully activated, the connector and receptacle assembly are locked together. The
receptacle locking device is provided with the capability to add a lockout tag device. The
in-line connections are secured through the use of a locking device similar to the short
throw receptacle. In addition to the locking devices on the coupler and receptacle shells, a
set screw is provided that is integral to the explosion protection. For the short throw shell

EXPLOSION HAZARD
Covers must be installed while not in use and must be protected while plug and
receptacle are mated to protect integrity of device.
To reduce the risk of ignition due to electrostatic discharge, avoid contact with the plug and
receptacle while explosive atmosphere is present. Clean only with damp cloth.
Connectors are to be shielded from exposure to UV light.
The maximum surface temperature measured on these connectors at full current and
+55°C ambient is +121°C.
and in-line coupler, this set screw should be tightened to fully engage the plug locking
ring when fully mated. For the rotating latch shell, the set screw should be adjusted out to
engage the latch assembly when in the locking position and adjusted in to disengage the
latch assembly. See Figure 2.
PROTECTIVE CAPS – Protective caps are recommended for sealing unmated receptacles
or connectors for protection against dust, water, moisture or other contamination, and
to ensure complete safety. Part Number A201113-1 (Protective Cap for Male or Female
Receptacle), A201113-6 (Protective Cap for Male Plug), A201114-4 (Protective Cap for
Female Plug).
CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION – The connector and receptacle insulators are available in the
following colors for circuit identification: black, yellow, red, orange, green, white, blue,
brown, purple and gray. Be careful to assemble proper insulator onto specific cable.

ELECTRICAL RATING – Mated connectors or connectors and receptacles are rated at
1000 volts AC or DC as follows continuous duty in open air. Ampacity is based on cable
used on receptacle and/or connector. The smaller MCM cable size determines maximum
ampacity for that circuit. Products are to only be used with copper Type P or TC-er
cable; cable range of 313-777 MCM.
