Is it Equal?
Skill: Composing and decomposing numbers to create equality.
Materials:
Nestable Pan Balance
Cubes (or other consistently sized items)
Paper and pencil
Put 8 green cubes in one pan and 5 blue cubes in the other. Have
the child set the comparison indicator to greater than, equal to, or
less than. Ask, "How would you write this as a number sentence?"
(8 > 5 ) How many yellow cubes will it take to balance the 2 sides to
be equal?" Add yellow cubes 1 at a time until the arms are balanced.
Move the comparison slider to the equal to symbol (=).
Ask, "How would you write this as a number sentence?"
(8= 8 or 8=5+3) Repeat this activity with different numbers. For an
additional challenge, introduce true and false statements such as,
"Write the equation 4+ 1 = 5 +2. Is this a true statement? Do the pans
balance? If not, what would you need to do to make them balance?"
Heavy Water
Skill: Weighing and comparing liquids.
Materials:
Nestable Pan Balance
Water
Cubes (or other consistently size items)
Remove 1 pan from the balance arm. Pour 50 mL of water into it.
Carefully place the pan on the balance arm. Put cubes in the empty
pan 1 at a time, until it balances. Ask, "How many cubes does the
water weigh?" Carefully add another 50 mL of water. Ask, "How many
cubes will you need to add so the pans are equal? Do all liquids with
the same volume weigh the same?" Weigh other liquids to check.
