To operate the appliance, plug the toaster into the
mains socket and slide the switch downwards.
Please note: The switch will only stay in the down
position if the appliance is connected to the
mains!
Important
• Attention: The toaster gets hot during
use.
Avoid touching the metal parts.
• If a slice of bread becomes trapped inside
the toaster:
- remove the plug from the mains socket;
- then remove the trapped slice carefully
from the toaster.
Take care not to damage the heating
elements whilst removing the bread.
Never use a metal object for this purpose.
• Bread may burn. Therefore, toasters must
not be used near or below curtains or
other combustible material. They must be
watched.
• Do not place any objects or heat-up buns
directly on top of the toaster as this could
lead to damage.
• When cleaning the toaster:
- First remove the plug from the mains
socket.
- Never immerse the toaster in water.
Wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
• If the mains cord of this appliance is
damaged, it must be replaced by Philips
or their service representative, as special
tools and/or parts are required.
For type HD 4865 only:
• Do not place the dust cover on top of the
toaster when the appliance is switched
on or when it is still hot as this could lead
to damage.
• If you wish to heat up buns, rolls or
croissants on the rack on top of the
toaster, press button
You need not set the browning knob nor
press another button.

Operation

Your toaster has an extra deep toast chamber.
This enables you to toast high-sized slices just as
perfectly as smaller ones.
- Insert one or two slices of bread (fig. 1). When
inserting only one slice, place it in the middle of
the slot.
- Before switching on, select the degree of
browning (fig. 2).
• Select a lower position (i.e. 1 or 2) for light
browning, for toasting only one slice or for dry
bread.
• For medium browning set the browning
selector to position 2-5.
Depending on the type of bread, fine-tuning of
the browning setting may be required to obtain
optimum results.
• Select a higher position (i.e. 5-7) for darker
browning.
For type HD 4860 only: Select a higher position
(i.e. 5-7) for frozen bread.
(When toasting a series of slices, no re-
adjustment is required.)
• To reheat cooled-off toast set the browning
selector to position
- Switching on. The slices are lowered into the
toaster by sliding the slide switch downwards.

- When ready, the toast pops up automatically
(fig. 5) and the toaster switches off the heating

• If necessary, you can move the slide switch
upwards a little further (until it stops) (fig. 6).
This can be helpful when removing smaller
slices of bread.
• You can interrupt the process of toasting by
pressing button

• Removing crumbs from the toaster:
First remove the mains plug from the wall
socket (fig. 8).
Pull out the crumb tray (fig. 9).
Do not shake the appliance upside down to
remove the crumbs.
• After use, the mains cord can be wound up for
storage (fig. 10).
