the graduation marks. Now slowly turn your-
self around until the red end of the magnetic
needle points exactly to the North mark of the
casing. Now you can read the other cardinal
points.
If you want to orientate yourself in open
country you should always use a map as well.
Before orientating with a map you have to
"north it in". "Northing in" means that you
have to display the map with the help of the
compass so that the North indicated on the
map coincides with the real North.
