4. Hints for orientation in nature
By watching carefully you also can see things
in nature which will help your orientation:
• The West can be determined by observing
free standing trees. In our latitudes the wind
almost always comes blowing from the
West. The side of the trees exposed to the
West is called the windward side. This side is
overgrown with moss and usually furrowed
and rougher than the side of the trees
turned away from the wind. So the
windward side shows towards the West.
• The wind also influences the growth of free
standing trees; it provokes them to bend
