Bushing with Metal Thread Insert
Installation Instructions

Spears ® bushing with
Metal Thread Insert is
designed to convert any
FlameGuard™
¿ tting socket to a 1/2"
threaded sprinkler head
¿ tting. This adapter can
be easily solvent cemented into Tees, Elbows,
couplings, etc. for direct connection of sprinkler
head. Threaded poly nipple is included to hold
adapter during installation and keep cement
out of threads.
System design and installation must be
made in accordance with criteria speci¿ ed in
Spears ® publication, FG-3, FlameGuard™
CPVC Fire Sprinkler Products Installation
Instructions.
BASIC ADAPTER INSTALLATION
STEP 1
Thread Poly Nipple holding tool into Bushing.

STEP 2 Apply cement to fitting socket and Bushing
spigot end.

STEP 3
Immediately insert Bushing into socket using a
1/4-turn.
Hold for 30 Seconds

STEP 4 Sprinkler head may be installed once the joint
has cured a minimum of 30 minutes.
System may be pressure tested
following speciÀ ed cure time schedule.
STEP 5 Apply thread sealant to sprinkler head male
threads.

Spears Manufacturing Company highly recommends the
BLUE 75™ thread sealant, which has
®
use of Spears
been tested for compatibility with Spears ® products. Please
follow the sealant Manufacturers' Application/Installation
instructions. Choice of another appropriate thread sealant
is at the discretion of the installer.

IF YOU MUST USE A TAPE SEALANT:
1. Use TFE tape no less than 2.5 mil thick.
2. Initial wrap must fully cover the thread end.
3. Wrap clockwise with standard pipe threads.
4. Use only 2-3 wraps of tape.
STEP 6
Apply wrench make-up of no more than one
to two turns beyond finger tight thread engagement. Care
must be taken in final positioning so as to avoid the need to
"back-out" (unthread) the wrenched assembly.
DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN AS DAMAGE MAY OCCUR.
