14. RECTIFYING PROBLEMS
Problem
Insufficient heat
Too hot and/or flare-ups
Heat not evenly distributed
over grill surface
Yellow flames
Incomplete flame
Flashbacks (flames outside
of venturi tubes/at control
knobs)
Flames higher than edge of
bowl
Pressure regulator buzzing
Burner whistles when set
to LOW
Igniting burner fails
(both with igniter and match)
Igniting burners fails
with igniter
No sparks or sound when
pressing igniter
Only sound (no sparks)
when pressing igniter
Sparks visible that do not
reach burners
Sparks visible but not
on all electrodes and/or not
powerful enough

Potential causes
• Gas supply not open
• Venturi tubes not situated above the
openings of the gas valves
• Burner openings blocked
• Gas bottle (almost) empty
• Pressure regulator not correctly connected
to bottle and/or hose
• Food too fatty
• Fat drain openings blocked,
fat in bowl, and/or on burners
• Temperature too high
• Some difference in heat is normal, see
"1.7 Using the heat efficiently" and "10.6
Using the heat zones". Potential causes of
considerable differences in heat:
• Appliance not pre-heated
• Burners or venturi tubes blocked
• Salt on burners
• Appliance connected to butane
• Burner blocked, pierced, or corroded
• Burners or venturi tubes blocked
• Wind
• Gas bottle (almost) empty
• Fat in bowl and/or on burners
• Warm weather
• New (full) gas bottle
• Gas injector, venturi tube, and/or burner
soiled
• Burner or venturi tube blocked
• No gas supply
• No battery inserted or battery inserted
incorrectly
• Middle burner not ignited first
• Igniter wiring not correctly connected
• Electrode damaged
• Incorrect grounding
• Defective igniter
• No battery inserted or battery inserted
incorrectly
• Battery depleted
• Igniter button not correctly fitted
• Defective spark generator
• Incorrect grounding
• Burner and electrode too far apart
• Defective wiring
• Incorrect grounding
• Battery (almost) depleted
• Wet or defective electrodes

Solutions
• Open gas supply
• Place venturi tubes above the openings of
the gas valves
• Clean burner openings or replace burners
• Replace gas bottle
• Re-connect pressure regulator to bottle
and/or hose
• Cut off excess fat or select a lower heat for
the burners
• Clean fat drain opening, bowl, and burners
• Select a lower heat for the burners and/or
grill food indirectly
• Pre-heat appliance
• Clean burners and venturi tubes
• Clean burners
• Connect appliance to propane and use a
suitable pressure regulator
• Clean or replace burner
• Close the gas supply and set the burners to
OFF.
• Allow the appliance to cool.
• Clean burners and venturi tubes.
• Turn rear of appliance to wind
• Replace gas bottle
• Clean bowl and burners
• No hazard or fault; stops automatically
after a short period of time.
• Clean gas injector, venturi tube, and burner
• Clean burner and venturi tube
• Open gas supply and press safety button
on pressure regulator (not present on all
regulators)
• Re-insert/insert battery with correct polarity
• Ignite middle burner first
• Check all igniter connections and
re-connect
• Replace electrode
• Check electrodes, burners, and igniter and
re-assemble
• Replace igniter
• Re-insert/insert battery with correct polarity
• Replace battery
• Re-fit igniter button
• Replace spark generator
• Re-connect spark generator and
• electrodes
• Bend electrode slightly to move it
closer to burner
• Replace wiring
• Re-connect spark generator and electrodes
• Replace battery
• Dry electrodes with kitchen paper or replace
electrodes
