3.
Measure the plug gap with a feeler gauge. Correct as necessary by bending
the side electrode, see Figure 28. The gap should be set to .02-.03 inches
(0.60-0.80 mm).
Electrode
.030 in. (0.76 mm)
4.
Check that the spark plug washer is in good condition and thread the spark
plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading.
5.
After the spark plug is seated, tighten with a spark plug wrench to compress
the washer.
NOTE: When installing a new spark plug, tighten 1⁄2-turn after the spark plug
seats to compress the washer. When reinstalling a used spark plug, tighten
1⁄8- to 1⁄ 4 -turn after the spark plug seats to compress the washer.
The spark plug must be tightened securely. A loose spark plug can become
very hot and can damage the engine.
Fuel Filter
Gasoline and its vapors are extremely flammable and explosive. Fire or
explosion can cause severe burns or death.
Keep gasoline away from sparks, open flames, pilot lights, heat, and other
ignition sources.
Check fuel lines, tank, cap, and fittings frequently for cracks or leaks. Replace
if necessary. See a Sears or other qualified service dealer to replace fuel line.
Before replacing the fuel filter, drain the fuel tank or close the fuel shut-off
valve.
Replacement parts must be the same and installed in the same position as
the original parts.
If fuel spills, wait until it evaporates before starting engine.

Otherwise, fuel can leak out and cause a fire or explosion.
2.
Use pliers to squeeze tabs on the clamps, then slide the clamps away from
the fuel filter. Twist and pull the fuel lines off of the fuel filter. Refer to Figure
29.
3.
Check the fuel lines for cracks or leaks. Replace if necessary.
4.
