14. Contaminants in the fluid may damage the hydraulic components.
Flushing the reservoir tank and hoses with kerosene whenever
service is performed on the tank, hydraulic pump or valve is recom-
mended. Contact a Sears or other authorized service dealer.
WARNING
Use extreme caution when working with kerosene. It is an extremely
flammable fluid.
Hydraulic Filter
Change the hydraulic filter every 50 hours of operation. Use only a 10
micron hydraulic filter. Order part number 723-0405.
BEAM AND SPLITTING WEDGE
Before each use, lubricate both sides of the beam (where it comes into
contact with the splitting wedge) with engine oil. The wedge plate on
the log splitter is designed so the gibs on the side of the wedge plate
can be removed and rotated and/or turned over for even wear. See the
Gib Adjustment section.
Make certain to readjust the adjustment bolts so the wedge moves
freely, but no excess space exists between the wedge plate and the
beam.
ENGINE
WARNING
If the engine has been running, the muffler, engine head and spark
plug will be very hot. Be careful not to touch any of these components
until they have cooled.
Oil Recommendations
Refer to the viscosity chart (Figure 21) for oil recommendations. Do not
over-fill. Use a 4-stroke, or an equivalent high detergent, premium qual-
ity motor oil certified to meet or exceed U.S. automobile manufacturer's
requirements for service classification of a minimum level SF or SG
(higher letter ratings are acceptable such as SJ, SL and SM grades).
Motor oil will display this designation on the container.
NOTE: Do not use non-detergent oil or 2-stroke engine oil. It could
shorten the engine's service life.
SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE
Figure 21
Check Engine Oil
1.
Stop the engine and wait several minutes before checking the oil level.
2.
Remove the oil fill dipstick. See Figure 22.
3.
Check the oil level on the dipstick. With the engine on level ground,
the oil must be between the HIGH and LOW marks on the dipstick.
4.
Replace the dipstick and tighten.
Changing Engine Oil
1.
Carefully disconnect the spark plug wire and keep it away from
the spark plug. Refer to Figure 23 for spark plug location.
Spark Plug
NOTE: To prevent arcing, keep the disconnected spark plug wire
securely away from the metal parts where arcing could occur.
