6. Add one or more spacers to steerer tube, ensuring the spacer stack does
not exceed 50 mm (Fig. 4).
7. Install the stem on the steerer ensuring that it is flush against the
spacers. Ensure the steerer tube extends at least 8 mm (Fig. 5).
NOTE: Do not continue installation if the steerer tube does not extend
8 mm above the stem clamp.

8 Add a 10 mm spacer above the stem clamp and use a fine-tip felt
marker to mark the steerer tube along the top edge of the spacer if there
is extra steerer tube (Fig. 6).

9. Remove the fork from the headtube and set aside the spacer(s) and
headset components.
10. Locate the mark made in step 8. Measure down 3 mm and make a new
mark for cutting (Fig. 7). Erase the first mark.

11. Double check measurements to make sure the steerer tube will not be
cut too short. It's easier to measure twice than to buy a new fork.
NOTE: After cutting, the steerer tube must be 3 mm below the 10 mm
spacer to allow top cap installation (Fig. 8). Refer to the two different
directions below for cutting either carbon or alloy/steel.

STEP 2 CUT THE STEERER TUBE
1. Carbon Steerer Cutting Instructions
A. Put on protective gloves and safety glasses.
B. Using a new carbon cutting hacksaw blade and a cutting guide,
cut the steerer tube.
C. Remove burrs and sharp edges with fine-grit sandpaper.
D. Clean the steerer tube and inside of the stem clamp with rubbing
alcohol to remove grease and dirt.
2. Metal Steerer Cutting Instructions
A. Put on protective gloves and safety glasses.
B. Using a new fine-tooth hacksaw blade, vise, cutting fluid, and proper
cutting guide, cut the steerer tube. A pipe-cutter may be used with
aluminum steerer tubes.
C. Remove burrs and sharp edges with a metal file.
D. Clean the steerer tube and inside of the stem clamp with rubbing
alcohol to remove grease and dirt.
STEP 3 FINAL ASSEMBLY
1. Refer to the two different directions for installing the compression plug
or star nut.
WARNING: Never use a star nut with a carbon steerer tube fork
(Fig. 9). Use a compression device designed for carbon steerers.

Star Nut Installation
A. Hold the fork with one hand (Fig. 2) and install a new star nut using
a star nut setting tool and hammer (Fig. 10).

B. Clean the steerer tube with rubbing alcohol.
Compression Plug Installation
A. Prepare compression plug according to the compression plug
installation instructions.
B. Tighten the compression plug to the torque spec provided by the
compression plug manufacturer.
